LOOKING FOR WINTER HANDLER — Fairbanks, Alaska

Looking for a hardworking, dog loving person who wants to spend a winter immersed in sled dogs, training, and racing.

I am looking for a handler to join my competitive limited-class sprint racing kennel for the upcoming winter season in Fairbanks, Alaska.

My sprint dogs train and compete in 4-dog, 6-dog, and 8/10-dog classes, and I am looking for someone who is genuinely interested in learning the sport and becoming part of the kennel.

What the job involves:

I am looking for help approximately 4–5 days per week, generally a few hours per day, with kennel responsibilities including:

- Feeding and watering dogs
- Scooping and general kennel chores
- Cutting and preparing meat
- Putting straw in dog houses
- Preparing and maintaining sledding gear
- Helping repair and maintain fencing, dog houses, and other kennel equipment
- Helping with training and conditioning
- Training sprint racing teams approximately 3 days per week
- Traveling to and handling at races
- Other general kennel tasks as needed

** The exact schedule is flexible and can be worked around school, a part-time job, or other obligations. Please just let me know and I am happy to work with the right individual.

Depending on experience, ability, and how things develop throughout the season, there will be opportunities to run sprint teams and potentially race for the right individual.

* I also have a team of distance Alaskan Huskies that run tours and camping trips and have some racing experience. They are an incredible group of dogs, and because my primary focus has been sprint racing, they haven't had as many opportunities to race as I would like.
I would be very open to the right person having opportunities to work with, train, and potentially race the distance team as well. *

- Experience -

Previous dog experience is preferred, especially experience with working or sled dogs, but I am willing to train the right person.

What matters most to me is that you are:

- Hardworking and dependable
- Responsible and comfortable working outside in winter (very dark and cold here at times)
- Willingness to learn
- Loves dogs!
My dogs are raised as pets and family. They come in the house, play in the yard together ect... so someone that shares that same philosophy is a must.

- Housing-

You would have your own private space in a brand-new dry cabin on the property, which will be ready this fall.

The cabin will have:

- Electricity
- Indoor composting toilet
- Wifi

The main house is next door and has:

- Running water
- Shower
- Washer/dryer

If you're interested, send me a message with a little about yourself, your dog/animal experience, what you're looking for this winter, and why sled dogs or mushing interests you.

Lunchtime walks. Loopy, the red husky pup, remembering her recall training after the long winter. Toby has to carry his emotional support ball the entire walk. Axel and Letty just mostly follow me and check in to get treats every 10 seconds

The bathing station!
Matt made this tiled sink a few years ago as a multi use tool. It is used most of the time as the "dog" or muck sink for filling their food buckets, cleaning and basically keeping things away from the human kitchen. He also installed hooks so it can be used as a dog bathing station. It works amazing for when certain dogs need a bath. The sled dogs don't need bathing often. These are the only two in the entire kennel that get some seasonal skin irritation from allergies and giving them medicated baths really seems to give them some relief.

You would think Cinderelli is like 12 years old...except that she is only 1.5 😆 she just wants to sleep on the couch all the time while everyone plays outside. Dogs actually aren't allowed on my couch, but she has made herself an exception always with a fluffy blanket. However,
put her in a harness, and she is one the hardest driving, wicked smart leaders that I have!
