Macomb’s John Leach followed his opening-round 3-under 69 with an even-par 72 to claim the 40th GAM Senior Championship at Birmingham Country Club!

West Bloomfield’s Greg Davies finished runner-up in a scorecard playoff after tying Leo Daigle at 2-over 146.

In the Super Senior Division, Bloomfield’s Ian Harris took the title, with Jackson’s Steve Maddalena finishing runner-up.

IAN HARRIS, JOHN LEACH SHARE LEAD AT GAM SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

BIRMINGHAM – Two-time past champion Ian Harris of Bloomfield and John Leach of Macomb shot 3-under 69s and shared the lead through the first round of the 40th GAM Senior Championship presented by Golf Digest Monday at Birmingham Country Club.

They were the only two golfers of 152 who finished the first round under par on a windy, cold day with wet playing conditions.

Rick Williams of Northville and Gunnar Karlstrom of Clarkston were next with even-par rounds of 72, and Leo Daigle of Wixom and Mark Eriksen of Clarkston each shot 73.

Five golfers were in the group who shot 74. They included Scott Appleford of Birmingham, Dave Sperry of Traverse City, Jim Barnes of Bloomfield Hills, Tom Gieselman of Commerce Township and 2023 Champion Greg Davies of West Bloomfield.

Rick Crandall of Fenton, the two-time defending champion, shot 75 in the first round.

All the golfers in the championship played from the same tee positions and are competing for the overall championship, but a Super Senior winner (age 65-plus) will also be recognized following Tuesday’s second and final round.

Harris, who is 73 and won the overall titles in 2012 and 2014, leads among the Super Senior players.

Another great 2 days at The Fortress for our 6th GAM Two-Person Scramble presented by the Grand Hotel!

Taking the Gross title yesterday was the team of Robert Olds and Robert Hermes, who shot a 10 under 62! Taking runner up was the team of Jamie Learman and Brett McBride, who won in a scorecard playoff after 6 teams shot 63.

Today’s in the Net Scramble, the team of Art Black and Joseph Shaffer, won on the 4th playoff hole of a 3 team playoff. Andre Lang and Jerry Tranzow take runner-up.

We’re excited to welcome Patrick Wilkes-Krier of Kendall Golf Academy and Jimmy Wisinski of Kent Country Club as co-head coaches for the inaugural Team Michigan junior golf development teams.

Joining them are Kelly Kuhlman as Assistant Coach, Steve Brady as Senior Advisor, Debbie Williams-Hoak as Committee Member, and Anika Dy as the Team Captain and Manager.

This incredible group brings a wealth of experience in teaching, playing, and developing junior golfers—and they’re ready to help Michigan’s top young athletes take the next step toward the national stage. ⛳️

Congratulations to Dearborn’s Elayna Bowser and Wyandotte’s Chelsea Collura, who shot a 3 under par 67 during the local qualifier at Dearborn CC today to qualify for the 2027 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball!

The 2027 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball will be held May 15-19, 2027 at Farmington CC in Charlottesville, Va.

What a great two days! Portage’s Chet Vandenberg captures the 44th GAM Mid-Amateur Championship title after posting rounds of 67-72 for 3 under 139!

Bloomfield Hills’ Scott Strickland finishes with a birdie on 18 and takes runner up.

Taking the Mid-Senior title is DeWitt’s Nate Clark with a 2 under 140.

Kevin Vandenberg adds his 3rd Senior title in the last 4 years. John Leach was runner-up.

And Steve Maddalena captures the Super Senior title after making birdie on the 2nd playoff hole against Kerry Buettner.
