🏋️🔥 Did you know? Building muscle doesn't just make you stronger—it also helps your body burn more energy around the clock while improving blood sugar control, metabolism, and long-term weight management.
Although muscle doesn't burn hundreds of extra calories at rest like many viral posts claim, it is more metabolically active than body fat. Every pound of muscle requires energy to maintain, meaning the more lean muscle you have, the more calories your body naturally uses each day—even when you're sitting, sleeping, or watching TV.
The benefits go far beyond resting metabolism. Muscle is your body's largest glucose disposal organ, helping remove sugar from the bloodstream and store it as glycogen after meals. A 2023 review published in Sports Medicine found that regular resistance training improves insulin sensitivity, metabolic health, body composition, and healthy aging, making it one of the most effective forms of exercise for long-term health.
Strength training also increases the number of calories you burn during exercise and throughout recovery, a phenomenon known as excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). Combined with improved muscle mass, this contributes to higher overall daily energy expenditure over time.
While cardio is excellent for heart health and calorie burning, combining it with resistance training is one of the most effective strategies for maintaining a healthy weight, preserving muscle as you age, and supporting lifelong metabolic health.
💡 Try this: Aim for 2–3 full-body strength-training sessions each week, focusing on compound exercises like squats, deadlifts, rows, push-ups, lunges, and presses. Pair your workouts with adequate protein intake (about 20–30 grams per meal) to help support muscle growth and recovery.
