The more you understand the details of sprint mechanics, the more value you can bring to your athletes.

Leg recovery is one of those details that can easily get overlooked. How efficiently an athlete recovers and repositions their leg influences their ability to strike the ground effectively and maintain speed.

Understanding these concepts allows coaches to identify inefficiencies, select the right drills, and make more informed decisions throughout the training process.

One of the most powerful tools in speed development is teaching athletes how to self-organize.

We often start our sprint sessions by letting athletes run naturally, without any constraints. Then, we introduce specific constraints that challenge their coordination, stability, and movement patterns.

Once those constraints are removed, we let them sprint freely again and observe how their bodies adapt.

At Parisi Speed School, even something as simple as glute activation is part of a much bigger picture.

Our warm-ups are intentionally designed to prepare athletes for the demands of speed, power, and athletic movement. Glute activation plays an important role in developing hip stability, controlling pelvic position, and preparing the body to produce force efficiently.

Every drill has a purpose, and every phase of our system builds on the next. From activation and movement preparation to our anchor drills, application drills, and competitive challenges, nothing is thrown together randomly.

Leg recovery plays an important role in sprint mechanics and overall speed development.

One of the biggest things we emphasize at Parisi Speed School is teaching athletes how to efficiently recover the leg after ground contact and reposition it for the next stride.

This drill helps athletes develop better coordination, rhythm, and timing while reinforcing the mechanics needed for efficient sprinting.

Developing max velocity mechanics starts with teaching athletes how to move efficiently through the sprint cycle.

Different ankle dribble progressions introduce the circular motion of sprinting, almost like pedaling a bicycle. These drills help athletes develop rhythm, coordination, and proper foot recovery while learning to cycle the leg efficiently and apply force back into the ground.

Sometimes removing a movement component is the best way to improve the entire chain.

Teaching our new coaches at Education for Trainers live we often take the arms out of certain drills to expose weaknesses in an athlete’s movement patterns, and coordination.

Without the arms contributing to balance and rhythm, athletes are challenged to self-organize and find more efficient ways to control their bodies.

Foot and ankle strength plays a major role in speed.

Every time an athlete strikes the ground, the foot and ankle must be strong enough to handle high forces and efficiently transfer that force into the ground.

Developing strength through the full range of ankle extension helps athletes achieve a more complete toe-off position, contributing to better propulsion and more efficient sprint mechanics.

At Anatomy of Speed LIVE, we teach coaches how to develop these qualities and understand the biomechanics behind faster, more efficient sprinting.

This wall drive variation uses a medicine ball as a target to help athletes develop better knee drive mechanics, and consistency during acceleration.

One of the biggest lessons in speed development is understanding that you can’t fix everything at once. Sometimes, improving one part of an athlete’s mechanics means temporarily sacrificing something else.

That’s why we isolate specific movements, establish clear objectives, and build progressions around them.

Most athletes spend the majority of their speed training sprinting in straight lines. But how often does that happen in sports?

In Anatomy of Speed live, we emphasize curvilinear running because athletes need to accelerate, maintain speed, and manage their body position while navigating curves.

Running on a curve requires precise control of body lean, ground force application, and coordination to maintain speed without losing efficiency.

It’s an often-overlooked component of speed development, and one we intentionally integrate into our training progressions.
