The City of Fredericksburg continues intensive snow and ice removal operations following Winter Storm Fern. City Public Works crews have been working around the clock treating and plowing roads to maintain safe travel, with an emphasis on major routes and secondary streets, per the City’s Snow Removal Priority Map. Crews have shifted efforts to Priority 2 roads and neighborhood streets; however, hazardous and icy conditions persist due to ongoing below-freezing temperatures.
Due to the combination of compacted snow and sustained temperatures below 20 degrees, much of the remaining ice cannot be effectively treated with temperatures well below freezing and until conditions improve. This has been an unprecedented snow event, and the City appreciates the community’s patience as crews continue to work through very challenging conditions.

⚠️ 𝗦𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀
• Public Works operations are focused on clearing city-maintained streets, prioritizing high-traffic roadways to ensure emergency and essential travel routes remain passable. The City hired contractors to assist with these efforts as well.
• Secondary streets and residential areas are being addressed as conditions allow.
• City maintenance staff from Public Facilities and Parks, Recreation & Events are focused on clearing city-owned parking lots and sidewalks, in accordance with state code requirements.
• Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads where possible to allow crews and public safety personnel to complete snow removal efficiently and safely.
• There are no roads in the city that are designated as closed due to snow. A few roads in the city have been identified as severe, which still need more treatment, due to the extreme conditions of this storm, which ended on Monday morning. These streets will be addressed as soon as time and resources allow.

To clarify responsibilities and support safe winter conditions:
• In order to clear roads as quickly as possible, snow may be pushed into driveways by City plows. This cannot be avoided. Clearing driveways is the responsibility of the occupant.
• The City does not clear alleys or driveways; these remain the responsibility of adjacent property owners. Residents who depend on alley access should plan to park on the street to avoid being inconvenienced by snow in alleys.
• Snow and ice from driveways and private property must not be placed in City streets or parking lanes. Extra snow should be placed in grass strips between the road and sidewalk or within private yards.
• Sidewalks and ADA access ramps adjacent to a private property (residences and businesses) are the responsibility of the property owner or occupant.
• Private parking lots are the responsibility of the property owner or property manager.
• Individuals are responsible for clearing snow from around their own vehicles.

• The Fredericksburg City Government will open Wednesday on a two-hour delay.
• Fredericksburg General District Court, Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court and Clerk's Office will be closed Wednesday.
• Fredericksburg Regional Transit (FXBGO!) will run limited service on Wednesday.
• City Public Works will not collect solid waste or recycling on Wednesday.
• Fredericksburg City Public Schools are closed on Wednesday.
• Old Mill Park, Alum Spring Park, Dog Park and Motts Run Reservoir are closed until further notice.

The City continues to respond to winter weather impacts and provides the following update on road conditions, facilities, and safety:

⚠️ 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
Thanks to the sunshine and ongoing treatment efforts, Priority 1 roads are in good condition. City crews continue cutting back snow and cleaning intersections. As temperatures drop this evening, refreezing is likely, and residents should remain alert for frozen pavement and black ice. Please continue to stay off the roads overnight and into early morning to support our crews’ snow removal efforts.

Public Works crews have actively plowed and treated Priority 2, secondary, and neighborhood roads throughout the day, with operations continuing tonight and into the morning. Crews will make repeated passes on Priority 1 and Priority 2 roads through the evening and early morning hours. With temperatures expected to remain below freezing for several days, salt and treatment will be applied as conditions allow.

🚗 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸𝘀, 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀
All City property parking lots have been cleared. Earlier efforts focused on downtown and City facilities in coordination with Public Facilities crews. Parks staff have revisited trails today; however, smaller trail bridges that cannot accommodate equipment remain snow-covered. The library area has been cleared and will receive additional attention in the morning.

🏢 𝗖𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀
Public Facilities crews, working alongside Parks & Recreation, have begun clearing access to all City facilities. These efforts will continue through the night and into the morning.

Public Works and Parks crews continue winter storm operations using a combination of City equipment and contractor support. Equipment in service includes plow trucks, tractors with plows and buckets, RTVs with plows, a compact tractor with a rotary brush, salt spreaders, and snow blowers. To date, City crews have used 329 tons of rock salt and 5,000 gallons of brine applied pre-storm, with replacement orders placed for additional brine and 350 tons of salt.

𝐒𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐚 𝟐𝟒-𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐟 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐥𝐲 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲. Additionally, the City’s contractor is assisting City crews with seven pieces of equipment and additional operators, focusing on Priority 1 roads.

🦺 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿
Police, Fire, and Rescue services have remained fully operational and have continued responding to calls as normal throughout the storm, with no storm-related injuries or power outages reported.

Residents are urged to continue using caution, particularly this evening and overnight, due to refreezing conditions and the potential for black ice. Please limit travel when possible and allow crews room to operate safely.

• Belman Road Convenience Center and Residential Area of the Regional Landfill will open at 10am on Tuesday.

WINTER STORM UPDATE

Crews remain out and about this morning working to clear roadways, especially after the cold overnight temperatures. VDOT currently lists I-95 in minor condition, most primary roads are in moderate condition, and most secondary roads remain in severe condition.

PLEASE continue to stay off the roads. Many roadways are still treacherous and plows are working to clear them so you can get out. The more traffic that drives on snow and ice covered roads, the more the snow and ice gets packed down, making it harder to plow.
