How to do a Guillotine Choke From Guard

Having trouble finishing the guillotine choke from guard? A small adjustment can make a big difference.

Professor Matthew Jones of Diamondback Jiu-Jitsu demonstrates a no-arm guillotine from guard and breaks down the details that help make the choke work. Instead of rushing to grab the neck and falling straight back, he shows how to sit up to the side, scoot back to improve your position, secure the neck, and create the right angle for the finish.

He also shows how to adjust if you accidentally fall back and explains how your arms, elbow, legs, and body position work together to finish the guillotine.

How to Finish an Arm Triangle From Side Control

The arm triangle choke is all about control, positioning, and pressure.

Professor Matthew Jones demonstrates how he likes to set up an arm triangle starting from deep side control. He uses a finger crawl to improve the position, gets his head underneath, and applies pressure before transitioning to mount. From there, he connects his hands palm-to-palm, takes a big step to keep his opponent from trapping his legs, then goes wide with his knees and sprawls to finish the choke.

Small positioning details can make a big difference when finishing an arm triangle.

How To Do a Standing Arm Triangle

The arm triangle isn’t just a submission you can attack on the ground. Professor Matthew Jones demonstrates how to set up a standing arm triangle using a duck under.

The setup starts by getting your opponent’s arm up and changing levels by bending your knees instead of folding forward at the back. From there, Professor Jones shows how to get the arm deep around the neck, secure a palm-to-palm grip, use head pressure, and pull and squeeze to finish the choke. If you need to tighten the position further, he also demonstrates switching to a rear naked choke-style grip.

It’s a simple way to turn a common standing movement into a submission opportunity.

How To Do The Arm Triangle From Guard

The arm triangle can be set up from several positions in Jiu Jitsu, but Professor Matthew Jones demonstrates one of his favorite ways to attack it from guard.

When your opponent puts their forearm across your neck, you can use that pressure to create the opening. Professor Jones shows how to push the arm across, catch the neck deep with the crook of your elbow, control the trapped arm, and position your body for the finish. He also demonstrates two ways to finish the choke: with a palm-to-palm grip or a rear naked choke-style grip.

It’s a great example of turning your opponent’s pressure into an opportunity to attack.

How To Do an Armless Triangle From Guard

What happens when you have a triangle from guard, but your opponent hides or pulls out the arm you normally need to finish?

Professor Matthew Jones of Diamondback Jiu-Jitsu demonstrates an armless triangle from guard and shows how to finish it in both gi and no-gi situations. In the gi version, he uses the collar to help control the position, clears the arm, locks the figure four, and applies the finish. In the no-gi version, he shows the importance of getting under the chin, removing the arm, adjusting the opponent’s head position, and tightening the lock.

It’s another option to have when your opponent thinks hiding their arm has stopped your triangle attack.

They Defend Your Omoplata? Then Lock The Triangle Choke

You attack the omoplata, but your opponent turns back toward you to defend. That defense may give you exactly what you need to transition into a triangle choke.

Professor Matthew Jones breaks down how to connect these two attacks from guard. He shows how your opponent’s reaction to the omoplata can create the opening for the triangle, then demonstrates important finishing details, including moving the arm across, changing your angle, locking your legs, bringing your knees together, and controlling the head. Instead of forcing one submission, learn how to use your opponent’s reaction to move directly to the next attack.

How To Do a Basic Omoplata From Guard

The omoplata is a powerful shoulder submission from guard, but getting into position is only half the battle. The small details in your control, angle, and finish can make the difference between getting the tap and giving your opponent a way out.

Professor Matthew Jones breaks down how to set up an omoplata from guard, control the collar and sleeve, rotate into position, and keep your opponent’s arm where you need it. He also shows how to adjust your position and use the arm as a lever to finish the shoulder submission.
