We here at GVCC we are hunters first and our calls show this. This is what makes a great call. To fool ducks or geese you need to replicate the way they sound. I am a full time guide and have been for ever...my wife is a design engineer and this was a perfect match to start the business. Being a good caller is a skill. Being able to “read” the birds is another skill, and honestly, it’s probably more important. A few basic notes (cluck and moan) at the right time are all it takes on most days. Practice watching the reactions when you call and take note. Some of the best hunters I know are not the best callers, but they sound realistic and know when to call and when to shut up.

Got Wood...?

How many of you use a wood goose call? If you do, is there a special reason or particular situation for choosing it? I personally enjoy using a wood goose call more when hunting over water or ice. I will also pull one if I'm hunting a field with trees lining it. The sound difference isn't huge, but it's just enough for me to notice and prefer it. If you're still with me, I’d love to know—what’s your favorite type of wood?

Don’t be that guy…

If you’ve ever come across “that guy” during a duck or goose hunt, you’ll feel this in your core. When invited on a waterfowl hunt, it’s common courtesy to ask if you can bring your dog. It’s also polite to check if you can join in on the calling. Just saying. 😂
