On August 1, 2023, Phoenix officers responded to reports of a man waving a fi***rm and intimidating people near 35th Avenue and Bell Road.
When officers arrived, one man reportedly pulled a handgun from his waistband and ran toward an officer while holding the weapon. An officer-involved shooting followed, and officers provided medical aid until fire personnel arrived.

I’m running a hostage scenario where an innocent person’s life is at risk and the threat has to be addressed. If I have cover, I’m going to use it. But when an innocent person is in immediate danger, there may be situations where you have to move toward the threat instead of creating more time and distance.
That means making decisions under pressure, identifying the threat, managing your backstop, and putting accurate rounds on the threat when deadly force is legally justified.
For this drill, I’m running the Kimber 2K11 with the Osight and Olight.
This is a controlled training scenario—not the Phoenix incident.
The question isn’t just, “Did the officer shoot?”
The question is: “What did the officer see, and what was happening in that moment?”
Training matters because real-world encounters don’t give you time to pause the video and analyze the frame.
