How Often Should Athletes Stretch?
For meaningful improvements in flexibility, aim to stretch the major muscle groups at least two to three days each week. Athletes who train frequently or have specific mobility limitations may benefit from shorter sessions on most days, provided the work remains gentle and does not irritate the joints or interfere with training.
A practical schedule is:
Before every workout: 5–10 minutes of dynamic mobility and progressive movement preparation.
After two or three workouts each week: 5–10 minutes of relaxed static stretching.
On recovery days: 10–20 minutes focused on individual restrictions, breathing and comfortable movement.
Consistency matters more than intensity. Five focused minutes performed several times each week will usually be more productive than one aggressive stretching session every few weeks.
