Happy Thursday everyone!
As we dive into the warmer months, we wanted to remind you all to stay hydrated and cool! 😎 The K9 Care Camp staff are trained and certified in CPR, which includes recognizing signs of heatstroke.
We also wanted to share some tips to keep your furry friends cool and safe from heatstroke!
💧Senior dogs, dogs with short snouts and dogs with underlying health conditions are more susceptible to Heatstroke. This is the same for cats 🐈
💧Signs that your dog might be overheating are:
- Heavy panting
- Bright red gums and tongue
- Skin that feels hot to the touch
- excessive drooling
- Difficulty maintaining balance
More severe signs are:
🔥Hyperventilation, dilated pupils and muscle tremors
🔥Collapse or coma
🔥Pale or bluish gums
🔥Shock and drop in blood pressure
🔥when the dog’s temperature exceeds 105.8 degrees Fahrenheit. For cats, it’s above 104 degrees Fahrenheit!
💧How to prevent heatstroke:
- Always have water on hand (room temperature)
- Plan breaks during outdoor activities
- Do not leave your furry friend in the car, even if it’s for a short period of time
- Don’t let cats outside if they aren’t used to the heat or other outside temperatures
- Always plan ahead and take weather into account
If your furry friend does experience heatstroke ALWAYS take them to the vet. Practice cool down methods to stabilize them, like: moving them to a cool place that’s well ventilated, spray cool water on them and/or placing damp and cool towels on them.
