A social dance can carry a history that no syllabus can fully preserve.

Osvaldo Agudio and Elvira Borrone belonged to a generation of Buenos Aires milongueros who kept that history alive on the floor. Their friend Jorge Manganelli called them milongueros de ley - true milongueros.

This recording at the historic Salón Akarense is not a theatrical performance or fixed choreography. Watch the way they walk, pause, redirect the movement, and remain in conversation through the embrace. Their tango is improvised and musical, but also unmistakably their own.

Akarense was also a place of transmission. Manganelli’s Peña de Tango La Ronda brought younger dancers together with older maestros, allowing customs and knowledge to pass from one generation to the next. Osvaldo and Elvira were remembered in a world that also included figures such as Gerardo Portalea, Antonio Todaro, and Pepito Avellaneda, and neighborhood venues including Akarense and Sin Rumbo.

What do you remember about Osvaldo and Elvira, Salón Akarense, or La Ronda? Your memories can help preserve this history.

For dancers who want to develop this kind of musical attention and connection, my Argentine Tango Mentorship Program includes remote study, in-person training in the Bay Area, and the possibility of coordinating work in Buenos Aires.

🎶 Tangos, milongas & valses #328

This new playlist brings together 43 recordings arranged in traditional tandas of tangos, milongas, and valses.

Vocal interpretations by Roberto Flores, Ángel Vargas, Andrés Falgás, Alberto Castillo, and Héctor Mauré alternate with the distinctive instrumental voices of Di Sarli, Pugliese, Troilo, and D’Arienzo.

A good Tango dancer is not someone who imitates the appearance of Tango, but someone who develops the physical, emotional, and cultural substance from which authentic Tango naturally emerges.

This principle is at the heart of my Argentine Tango Mentorship Program.

The goal is not simply to reproduce the visible form of Tango. It is to develop the physical, emotional, and cultural foundation from which an authentic personal Tango can emerge.

Mentorship is available in person in the San Francisco Bay Area, remotely for dancers elsewhere, and by arrangement in Buenos Aires.

Tangos, milongas & valses #327 is a 47-song playlist shaped like the musical architecture of a traditional milonga.

The sequence moves through carefully arranged tandas: Biagi’s sharp rhythmic drive, Caló’s elegance, D’Agostino and Vargas, Tanturi and Castillo in milonga form, Di Sarli’s refinement, Donato, Firpo valses, Troilo with Fiorentino, Lomuto, Varela with Argentino Ledesma, Pugliese, and a final surge from D’Arienzo.

As every traditional milonga must, it closes with “La Cumparsita.”

Before Rudolph Valentino became a screen legend, he had to make Hollywood work for him.

In 1917, after touring theatrical productions from New York to the West Coast, he arrived in Hollywood as a dancer and social dance instructor. Dance became his first doorway into film: wealthy clients, borrowed cars, and the search for screen roles.

From the dance floor to silent-film history.

Playlist #326 presents 42 carefully selected recordings arranged in traditional tandas for dancing, practicing, teaching, and attentive listening.

The journey begins with Ricardo Tanturi and the unmistakable voice of Alberto Castillo, followed by the elegant precision of Carlos Di Sarli. Alfredo De Angelis with Julio Martel brings lyrical warmth before Francisco Canaro and Ernesto Fama animate the floor with three spirited milongas.

From there, the playlist moves through Anibal Troilo, Francisco Lomuto with Jorge Omar, valses by Juan D'Arienzo, Miguel Calo with Raul Beron, Edgardo Donato, Osvaldo Pugliese with Roberto Chanel, and the powerful sound of Hector Varela with Rodolfo Lesica and Argentino Ledesma.

A balanced selection of tangos, milongas, and valses from some of the greatest orchestras and singers of the Golden Era.
