If you're not measuring speed with lasers, you don't actually know if your kid is getting faster.

A coaches eye with stopwatch isn't accurate enough.

That why there used to be multiple coaches with stopwatches back in the day

They knew it was too inaccurate to use just one

That's the difference between getting to the ball first and being a half-step late.

And here's the bigger piece speed doesn't improve in a clean straight line. There are weeks the body adapts and weeks it doesn't. Sometimes the numbers dip before they jump.

If you're not measuring, how do you know what's working? How do you know when the program needs to change?

You don't. You're guessing.

A real speed program measures everything. That's how you know what's actually happening.

If your kid came back from a speed camp and nothing changed on the field, you're not crazy.

Speed doesn't develop in a weekend. The body needs 8-12 weeks of consistent, progressive training before real adaptation even takes hold. A five-day camp starts the process. Then it fades within a few weeks because there's nothing keeping it going.

And most of that camp was probably cone drills and ladders. Which look great but are predetermined — your kid already knows where they're going before they move. That's not how games work. Games are reactive. Chaotic. Unpredictable.

Real speed comes from force production, proper sprint mechanics, and training that actually matches what their sport demands.
