People who don’t think they even have hopes and dreams, people who can’t see a way out of their current situation, people will say to my face that they don’t know what they want or, if they do, they don’t know what they could possibly do about it…

and I believe that they DO actually know and I challenge them and we talk and they figure out that you know what: they do know.

There’s more to what I do than that… but on a fundamental level, that’s it. That’s the whole job. Believing in people before they believe in themselves.

(and yes, I’m leaving in my wife’s “taxi driver” impression)

Iced coffee at a job interview?

Don’t do it

It doesn’t mean I think that’s fair, or right.

It just is the reality. It will reflect poorly on you. You seem unprepared and you’re bringing a slushy, icy, big plastic cup covered in condensation into a setting where you’re a guest.

Because I say that (here’s what people miss): it doesn’t mean I think that is “fair” or “good” or a “relevant way to distinguish among candidates” - although reading the room IS a skill.

It just means that is the CURRENT REALITY and if you want to succeed in the current reality you have to live in the current reality.

It doesn’t mean it can’t evolve. But do you want the damn job or not?!

Some people are trapped in their lives

Some people have locked themselves in their own Gilded cage and throw thrown away the key

I have empathy for all of you

Those who are truly trapped by circumstances are actually exceedingly few

They are far exceeded by who are trapped by their own stories they’ve been telling themselves, and the trappings of materialism they just believe are necessities

I think I’m supposed to start with this part but:

Unpopular opinion

When the hustle gurus tell you the only way to get ahead is to work around the clock, that’s not supported by any science or reality or history or story other than the fact that that’s what they report to do and they think of themselves as being morally superior to you

People who feel the need to compulsively work around the clock are not better than other people. They just have undiagnosed mental health issues. In that I would love to help them, and I don’t judge anyone who is struggling with any sort of mental health issue.

But passing it off as a virtue and making people feel bad because they’re “only” living a normal life, the same way humans have literally done since the dawn of our existence on this planet…

Is just another grift.

They’re probably selling a course.

We can have great material success doing what we love without breaking our back or working 24 hour days. Truly, it’s available to nearly all of us.

It’s not to say there won’t be hard work. But it does not have to be this insane hustle around the clock. And guess what the people who say it does aren’t even doing that.

They’re performing that

Stop performing, stop, listening to gurus, stop, pretending, figure out who the f**k you are and be that person

That’s it

That’s the whole trick

I’m curious and willing to have my mind changed by a good argument, so if you disagree, fire away. If you agree, wholeheartedly, then let’s talk. I’m sure you can figure out how to get a hold of me.

What do you want to do when you grow up? (yes: you, you grownup)

Not: what can you make money at?
Not: what are you good at?

What do you want?

When was the last time you asked yourself that?

Have you EVER asked yourself that?

I get it. You got bills to pay, mouths to feed. We’ll get to all that.

But if you don’t start with getting crystal clear on What You Actually Want, it doesn’t matter what you happen to be good at or what happens to fit your work experience, you’ll just be psyching yourself up to jump out of the frying pan into the fire.

Do you feel like you have permission to even consider what you actually want out of this life?

I coach people through exactly this question, mostly folks hitting a midlife crisis or just questioning the path they’re on. Based in New York, working with clients everywhere over Zoom or in person.

If you’d like someone to help you give yourself permission, let’s talk. Link in bio.

What if your supposed midlife crisis is just that the life you’ve been living is FAR smaller than what’s actually available to you?

In The Truman Show, Truman spends his whole life inside a soundstage built to look like the entire world, until he realizes the sky is painted and the ocean has an edge. A lot of people going through a midlife crisis are living a version of that. Not trapped by a TV producer, but by assumptions about work, success, and what life is supposed to look like - assumptions that got set before they ever had a say.

I coach people through exactly this moment: the point where you start questioning whether the life you built is actually the one you want. We get clear on what you actually want, then build a real plan to go get it. I’m based in New York and work with clients worldwide over Zoom or in person, and every relationship starts with a free conversation, no pressure, just to see if it’s a fit.

If this resonates, comment or DM me. Link in bio to book an intro call.

In before someone tells me ACTUALLY some people do have to spend every penny just to survive. No s**t, Jan. But many don’t. And they do it anyway. Then complain about The Golden Handcuffs
