After 52 1/2 years we have closed our retail operation. But I will keep writing about bikes, books, travel, food, opinions and thoughts about life in general.

QUOTE FOR THE DAY

Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.

HOW TO SELL BIKES!

I have always liked this scene from the 1969 movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid...

QUOTE FOR THE DAY

While it is a very hard and sometimes very cruel profession, my love for the bike remains as strong now as it was in the days when I first discovered it. I am convinced that long after I have stopped riding as a professional I will be riding my bicycle. I never want to abandon my bike. I see my grandfather, now in his seventies and riding around everywhere. To me that is beautiful. And the bike must always remain a part of my life.

Why is the transportation secretary complaining about ‘DEI bike lanes’? 07/18/2026

CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT A DEI BIKE PATH IS?

There are legitimate reasons for disagreeing with federal spending on local projects. Some might say that bike paths should be locally funded since they are primarily used by local residents. But then again, federally funded highways are used primarily by people in the general area where they are located.

I mean, really, a bike path is just that--a bike path. It is either a good idea that serves a needed purpose or an unnecessary project.

But calling local infrastructure "DEI bike paths" is, frankly, ridiculous. It is as if the word "DEI" is some demonic adjective which can be attached to anything some people oppose for one reason or another. A modern society functions by honesty, transparency and integrity. This kind of talk is contrary to those norms. If politicians do not like bike paths, let them explain why. If they cannot do so, they should shut up and concentrate on not acting like weak minded fanatics.

Why is the transportation secretary complaining about ‘DEI bike lanes’? Sean Duffy isn’t the only Republican complaining about DEI, but he seems to have an expansive definition of the idea.

NO HIDE AND GO BIKE THIS EVENING

I have not seen an official announcement but since a thunderstorm is moving into Oklahoma City as I write, it seems pretty obvious. The rain is good and much appreciated so we can all wait patiently until next Thursday.

IF YOU HEAR A TRAIN IT'S GOING TO RAIN

If you live in northwest Oklahoma City, there is an interesting weather feature that I noticed many years ago that is a good indicator of rain. THe BNSF north-south railroad runs across eastern part of the city and normally you cannot hear the trains if you live near Macarthur Avenue. But when the wind is out of the east, the sound will carry the six miles or more across the city. And when there is an east wind, that commonly is a sign of rain. Emily Sutton gives an explanation of this in the video below.

This morning I woke up and heard a distant train horn and thought that we would get some rain. And we did. It does not always work but you would be surprised how often it does. So if you hear a train while drinking your morning coffee in northwest Oklahoma City, you should check weather radar or your local forecast before you head out on a bike ride!
