IOWA CONGRESSMAN SAYS THEY DON'T RIDE BIKES THERE

Last time I checked, the biggest bike ride in the US was in Iowa. But, hey, if it works for him maybe others could follow. Josh Brecheen is running to be re-elected to the OK-2 Congressional seat in eastern Oklahoma which includes the city of Muskogee. Maybe he could hire a country singer to perform a campaign song to a familiar tune. Something like this?

We don't ride on bikes down in Muskogee.
'Lectric scooters either that you'll see.
We don't want those EV's in our driveways.
F-150's--drive em fast and drive em free!

Yes I'm proud to drive my pickup in Muskogee.
A place where cheap gas used to be.
With eight buck diesel down the street at Walmart.
Guess drivin' less is good enough for me.

NEW DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE SCHWINN BICYCLE COMPANY

When I was a kid, Schwinn bicycles were THE big name in bicycles. It was an American company that built bicycles at their factory in Chicago. By the 1980's they had started to fade and other brands took over the US bike market.

A few years ago, two authors decided to tell the Schwinn story in book form. Now it has been turned into a documentary. The trailer is below. The full documentary will be released soon. I am looking forward to watching it!

AN OLD TIMER FROM THE OKLAHOMA CITY BIKING COMMUNITY HAS TAKEN HIS LAST RIDE

This afternoon, my old coworker Andy called me from his new employer, Al's Bicycles in Edmond. He wanted to let me know that the founder of the chain, Al Webb, had died this morning.

Now having worked in the business for more than 42 years, I have known a great many people who have passed on. I even started keeping a list some years back and it is over 85 now. It would be pretty much impossible to acknowledge them all so when a new one passes I will often raise a glass and recall memories we shared. I have stopped going to funerals--too many and too sad. But once in a while I have to make a special note of one.

I first met Al shortly after I started working at Pro Bike in 1983. He had opened his first shop in the Oklahoma City area in 1979. It grew to a four store chain. We would often chat at trade shows and in recent years we would talk by phone about the trials and tribulations of the bicycle business. One of the last times I saw Al was at Wiley Post Airport several years back when some World War 2 planes were there. I was looking at a B17 Bomber like the one my uncle had flown. Someone called out my name and I looked up to see Al in the side gunner window of a B24 bomber. His father had piloted one of those during the war. That image sticks in my mind.

Al and I were competitors and we had our disagreements over the years. In the end we were both screwed around by the company that caused those problems, but we both lived long enough to see that company begin to lose massive amounts of money and today its future is quite uncertain. We both got some satisfaction from that.

On our last phone call, Al asked me, "Do you think we are the last of the old bike shops? Do you think there will be shops like ours in the future?" I told him I thought that big box stores and the internet would be the game from here on out. I still think so. The world is changing.

We always talked about getting together for lunch sometime but it never happened. So if you have a friend that you want to have lunch with, make it happen. We're not going to be around forever.

So Al, here's to you! Your earthly journey is over and you lived a good life and brought the joy of bicycling to a lot of folks.

IF YOU HAVE FRIENDS OR FAMILY IN THE AREA FROM SAN ANTONIO TO EL PASO, PLEASE TELL THEM TO THINK TWICE BEFORE VOTING FOR THIS GUY.

I have never directly endorsed or denounced any political candidate on this page. In this case, though, I think an exception is appropriate. Anyone who brags of fantasizing about killing cyclists who are in his way on the road has issues and does not belong in Congress.

Brace yourselves. It turns out that Nigel Farage’s critique of north London’s “bicycling classes” has nothing on his mates across the pond in the Republican Party.
