I was talking with Karry Batson about a few Rainshadow blanks for steelhead bead fishing, and it’s pretty clear he’s excited about them, especially the XST1412 that came out last year.

Karry joked that some of these blanks are so good they probably should’ve never been released to the public. 😂 Luckily, he decided to share them with us!

His three picks are the XST1263, XST1412, and the new RXXST106ML.

There’s just one catch. If you want to fish one of these rods, you’ll have to have it custom built!

That’s one of the things I enjoy most about what we do at Prolite. We get to take blanks like these and work with each angler to build something that fits the way they fish.

With steelhead season right around the corner, now’s a great time to get your build started.

One thing I've learned over the years building fishing rods is that there's rarely just one right way to do something.

There's a lot that goes into choosing the right blank, guides, reel seat, and grips. Sometimes the smallest decisions can make a pretty big difference in how a rod turns out.

I enjoy talking through those things with other builders. Everybody has their own ideas, experiences, and ways of doing things. I think that's one of the best parts of rod building.

There's always something to learn, no matter how long you've been doing it.

Want to build your own custom fishing rod?

I’m doing a small-group, 2-day rod building workshop at the Prolite shop.

You’ll come in and actually build your own rod with me.

Before the workshop, we’ll figure out what you want to build and pick out the blank, grips, reel seat, guides, colors and components. Then over the two days I’ll walk you through the same process I use building Prolite rods every day.

We’ll cover the whole build, guide layout, wrapping, epoxy, decals, finishing, and a lot of the little things that make a rod come out right.

I keep these groups small so I can actually work with everyone and answer questions as we go.

$250 for both days, plus whatever blank and components you choose for your rod.

If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to build rods, this is probably the best way I know how to teach it.

Fish with a rod you built yourself.
