Day 5 · Above the clouds.

Turn the sound on. The deep, steady tone you hear was recorded by our group during the retreat.

Sunrise over the Himalaya, asana practice with the mountains on the horizon, a bamboo swing put up for the Dashain festival, prayer flags all the way up to Namobuddha, and a quiet circle in a wooden hall.

In Nepal, people say a ride on the Dashain swing is the one time each year your feet leave the ground. On a morning like this one, we did not need the swing.

Day 5 · Sunrise, and Namobuddha.

The day began before dawn, with the sun rising over the Himalaya and a sea of clouds below us, followed by our morning asana practice. Then we walked a path strung with prayer flags to Namobuddha, sat quietly with the monks at prayer in the monastery on the hilltop, and gathered for a photo with the whole group and the mountains behind us.

Tradition holds that here, in a former life, the Buddha, then a prince, offered his own body to a starving tigress so that she and her cubs could live. The stupa marks the place. Its teaching is karuna, compassion that acts.

Day 4 · From Bhaktapur into the hills.

Turn the sound on. The deep, steady tone you hear was recorded by our group during the retreat.

Temple steps and stone guardians, lanes full of brass, clay, felt and color, a lunch in a courtyard café, and then the drive up into the hills, where the moon rose over the lights of the valley.

Legend says each pair of stone guardians on the stairs of Nyatapola is ten times stronger than the pair below it. The climb itself is the teaching: every step asks a little more of us, and gives a little more back.

Day 4 · Bhaktapur, the City of Devotees.

We spent the day in the old royal city of the Kathmandu Valley. We climbed the steps of Nyatapola, the five-tiered temple that has watched over Taumadhi Square since 1702, watched thangka painters fill a mandala with color, watched a potter at work, and found the Peacock Window, carved into a priests' house in the mid-1700s.

In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says yogah karmasu kaushalam: yoga is skill in action. In Bhaktapur that skill is everywhere, in every carved window and painted mandala, and all of it offered as devotion.

Day 3 · Swayambhunath.

The hilltop stupa west of Kathmandu that many travelers call the Monkey Temple. We circled the stupa beneath its painted eyes, stood beside the great vajra, and watched the light change over the whole valley, with the resident monkeys keeping us company.

Swayambhu means self-arisen. Legend says this valley was once a lake, and a lotus bloomed on its waters and gave off a light of its own. The stupa stands where that light appeared.

Day 3 · On the mat and on the cushion.

Asana practice above the rooftops of Kathmandu, silent sitting beneath the painted thangkas of a Tibetan Buddhist monastery, and the whole group together in front of the great golden statues near Swayambhunath.

Patanjali defines asana in three words: sthira sukham asanam, a seat that is steady and at ease. We worked on it on the mat, then tested it on the monastery floor.

Day 2 · Boudhanath to Pashupatinath. Turn the sound on.

From the prayer flags of Boudhanath to the evening fire at Pashupatinath, Nepal's most important temple to Shiva, on the banks of the Bagmati River. We wandered among its shrines, past bells polished by countless hands, stones red with offerings and monkeys on every wall, then sat quietly by the river. As night fell, the evening aarti began beneath a nearly full moon.

Along these same ghats, families bring their loved ones for cremation. Life and death share one river here, and sitting beside it, impermanence stops being an idea and becomes something you feel.
