🏊 Before Sacramento had the swimming pools we know today, residents could head somewhere much stranger: directly into the river.

Floating bathhouses and protected swimming areas once provided places for recreation along the Sacramento waterfront. Wooden decks, changing facilities and enclosed bathing areas turned part of the working river into a public swimming destination.

It's a reminder of how differently Californians once used their urban waterways.

The Sacramento River wasn't just transportation and commerce. It was part of everyday recreation.
