Most golfers are told to keep their head perfectly still. That one cue is quietly making your swing steeper and your path worse.

When you tilt too far left and lock your head in place, the club has nowhere to go but steep and over the top.

Here’s what actually works:

✅ Let your head move slightly right in the backswing - this keeps you in right side bend rather than collapsing onto your left side, which is what steepens the club
✅ Maintain that right side bend into the downswing - it gives the club room to approach from the inside rather than cutting across the ball
✅ Keep your head behind the ball through impact - this is what allows the path to naturally work inside-out without forcing it

The fix is not more restriction. It’s better tilt.

Most golfers lose control in the first foot of the backswing - before they’ve even had a chance to recover.

When the club drifts behind your body too early, every move after that is damage control.

Three things to check in your takeaway:

✅ Keep the clubhead in front of your hands - this stops the club getting stuck behind you before the swing has begun
✅ Let your body rotation drive the movement - relying on your arms alone disconnects the swing from its power source
✅ Feel the face staying connected to your chest as you turn - this keeps the path honest and the face from opening early

Get the takeaway right and the rest of the backswing has a genuine chance to fall into place.

If your ball striking feels inconsistent, your lead wrist in the backswing is one of the first places to look. Most golfers never realise it’s the problem.

A cupped left wrist at the top opens the clubface silently, and then you spend the entire downswing trying to recover.

✅ Hinge correctly from the start of the takeaway - this sets the wrist angle before bad habits have a chance to creep in.
✅ Keep the lead wrist flat as the club sets - this keeps the face square so you are not fighting it from the top.
✅ Arrive at the top in a position that gives you a real chance - a controlled hinge early makes this almost automatic, no overhaul needed.

Most golfers think a big shoulder turn means a good backswing - but if your trail leg is straightening, you’re losing the power before you’ve even started down.

The trail leg needs to stay flexed so you have something to load against. The moment it straightens, your weight drifts rather than coils.

✅ Keep the trail knee neutral in the takeaway - this stops the leg from pushing out and lets the hip absorb the load properly.
✅ Feel like you’re sitting into the trail hip - this creates the resistance your downswing needs to unwind against.
✅ Watch your lead knee - if it’s moving toward the ball, your trail side has already lost its structure.

If your left knee collapses inward on the backswing, you’re leaking all your power before you’ve even started down.

The knee drifting towards the ball is a sign your trail hip isn’t loading - it’s swaying instead of coiling.

✅ Feel a lateral lunge into your trail side - this keeps the knee stable and drives pressure into the hip rather than letting it slide past
✅ Sit into your trail glute - this loads the hip like a spring so you have something to push off on the way down
✅ Stay loaded, not tilted - the goal is resistance in the hip, not a weight shift that runs away from you

When the trail hip loads properly, the whole backswing becomes more controlled and your downswing has somewhere to unwind from.

A chicken wing looks like an arm problem. It isn’t. Your chest is the one causing it.

When the chest stalls through impact, it gets in the way and the arm has nowhere to go but fold.

✅ Keep the chest moving past the ball - this pulls the arms through rather than forcing them to find their own path
✅ Think rotation, not extension - the straight arm is a result of the chest doing its job, not something you manufacture with the arm itself
✅ If you’re actively trying to keep the arm straight, you’ve already lost - the fix happens earlier, in the body

Most golfers think across the line is a backswing problem. It’s actually a right arm problem.

When the right arm retracts behind the shoulder, the club has nowhere to go but across the line. From there, the club gets steep in transition, the path goes too far right, and the face stays open. That combination causes a lot of damage.

The fix is simpler than you think:

✅ Keep the right arm in front of the shoulder - this stops the club from going across the line before transition even begins
✅ Let it fold and lift, not retract - folding keeps the arm connected and the club on plane
✅ Fix the arm, fix the path - a shallower transition becomes almost automatic when the arm stays in place
