Most people hear the word responsibility and immediately feel heavy.
It lands like blame, or something else they should be doing better, or evidence of what’s wrong with them.
The actual meaning of responsibility is simply the ability to respond.
There’s no fault, no blame, nor one more thing to carry. Just the capacity to choose, rather than react.
The problem is most of us aren’t actually responding. We’re reacting. And we don’t even notice because the reaction happens so fast and feels so justified that it seems like a choice.
Someone says something and we’re defensive before we’ve even processed it. A situation arises and we’re already in the old pattern. We tell ourselves we’re responding — and then explain at length why we had no other option.
That explanation — the “but” that always follows — is where the pattern lives.
And the pattern is exactly what needs to change.
I think many people don’t realize that the fear around joy is often not about the joy itself, but about how unfamiliar safety, openness and emotional expansion can feel in the body.
For some nervous systems, joy can feel just as destabilizing as pain.
