It’s been a long road — construction, planning, building our curriculum, and creating a space that reflects our values: structure, safety, and steady growth.

On July 11, we’re celebrating with our community.

St. Augustine, this is the beginning of something amazing.

At Deep Roots Jiu Jitsu, what we are building goes far beyond the mats.

We are creating a culture—one that protects, uplifts, and holds the highest standard of respect for every person who walks through our doors. Whether you are a child, a woman, or a man, our commitment is the same: you should feel safe here. Physically, emotionally, and mentally.

As leaders—and as parents—this is non-negotiable for us. The environment, the visibility, and the standard we uphold matter. There is no compromise when it comes to safety.

Jiu Jitsu, at its core, is meant to empower. It is meant to give people confidence, discipline, and the ability to protect themselves—not to take advantage of others or create harm. And yet, we all know that the world is not perfect. We’ve seen situations where that trust has been broken, and truthfully, it’s something that should never be tolerated or accepted under any circumstance.

At Deep Roots, we have a clear stance:
Zero tolerance for harassment.
Zero tolerance for bullying.
Zero tolerance for anything that compromises the safety and dignity of another human being.

No exceptions.

We believe that the responsibility starts with leadership. We teach by example. We set the tone. We hold the line. Because culture is not something you talk about—it’s something you live every single day.

Our mission is simple, but not easy:
Create good humans first.
Teach Jiu Jitsu second.
If we get the first part right, the second one will always follow the right path.

In a world that can feel unpredictable at times, we want Deep Roots to be a place where people can take a breath… where families feel comfortable, where kids are protected, and where everyone knows they are surrounded by people who care, who respect boundaries, and who look out for one another.

That’s the standard. That’s the expectation. That’s what we are building.

Professor Tony has arrived in St. Augustine, and we’re excited to begin what comes next.

This is the foundation of the Deep Roots family.
We are not building this on hype or short-term momentum. We are building it on values, standards, and a culture that holds up over time. The goal is not just growth. The goal is to build something sustainable.

A mastermind is not a title. It is alignment. Different strengths, one mission, one vision, and a shared commitment to doing things the right way. People may come and go, but the culture has to stay.

And it starts with us. As a team, we hold ourselves to the same standards we ask of our students. We practice what we teach and do our best to lead by example, so what happens on the mat is consistent with how we show up off the mat.

From there, it carries into the room, the team, and ultimately the community.

This is where it starts.

You have likely heard us talk about this before. We repeat it often because it matters. Intention is not a marketing line for us. It is how we build.

Everything we do at Deep Roots Jiu Jitsu is meticulous, thought through, and deliberately selected. From the brand name and logo, to the sign outside the academy, to the windows chosen for our viewing room—nothing is accidental. Every detail matters. This is simply another example of that commitment in practice.

That same standard guided the retail display and front desk. These were not pulled from a catalog or treated as visual fillers. They began as an idea, moved to a hand drawing, evolved into an AI rendering, and are now becoming real, functional designs.

They are being built by our friend Dean Moksnes, a St. Augustine native whose work reflects true craftsmanship. Dean approaches each piece with patience and discipline. Every cut, joint, and finish receives the attention it deserves. Not rushed. Not compromised.

These pieces are meant to serve a purpose and stand the test of time. They reflect how we think, how we train, and how we build—quietly, intentionally, and with respect for the process.

Deep Roots Jiu Jitsu was built with people in mind.

After many years on the mats, one thing became clear: most academies are not designed for families. Parents train. Kids train. But the space around them is often an afterthought. We experienced it ourselves, and we heard it consistently from others.

So we listened. And we built accordingly.

The image attached was created using an AI model inspired by the actual blueprint of our space. It offers a glimpse of what we are building, without giving away the full surprise. A space where families can stay connected, present, and involved, even when they are not physically on the mats.
