On February 28, 1942, four Navajo men pulled out of Los Angeles shipyard jobs stood in a room at Camp Elliott and took a written Marine combat order apart.

Philip Johnston had arranged it. Born in Kansas in 1892 and raised from the age of four on the Navajo Nation where his father was a missionary, he grew up fluent in a language almost no outsider spoke. After Pearl Harbor he read that the Army had used Comanche speakers in the last war, and he carried an idea to the Marines.

The test was simple and unforgiving: hand over a field order, have it turned into Navajo, transmitted, and turned back into English. It came through intact, and fast. Major General Clayton Vogel watched the whole thing, and afterward asked Headquarters Marine Corps for 200 Navajo recruits. Headquarters authorized 30.

Twenty-nine reported. They went through boot camp at MCRD San Diego as Platoon 382, then to Camp Elliott, and built the thing from nothing — a 26-letter alphabet made out of Navajo animal words, plus 211 military terms that did not exist in Navajo until these men invented them. It grew to 411 terms. It was never broken.

Roughly 400 Navajo Marines eventually carried it across the Pacific. Every word of it was written on a San Diego mesa that is a suburb now.
