In our latest blog post, we tested bird identification at 50m, 150m, 300m and even 500m distance. What changes surprisingly quickly isn't just the size of the bird in the image, but the amount of visible detail. Heat haze, air clarity and lighting all start playing a huge role at longer distances. It's a really interesting reminder of how much conditions influence what we see in the field!

Do you follow Black Swamp Bird Observatory’s Morning Flight Count? It’s an incredible example of visible migration being tallied by BSBO spring & fall. Counters will tally all migrants passing throughout out the migration period and thus far, they have already tallied almost 725,000 individuals and are approaching 160 bird species. During The Biggest Week In American Birding counters and interpretive assistants will be on hand on the d**e at the Metzgar Marsh parking lot pointing out birds flying past the point. Drop in and visit to see this amazing spectacle first hand. We are fascinated by visible migration and proud to be a continuing sponsor. You can follow along at home to see the migrants tallied daily here https://trektellen.org/site/totals/3929/2026 or visit trektelken.org and and search for “Black Swamp” and select their Metzgar Marsh migration site.

Did you know that The Biggest Week In American Birding is held in the "Warbler Capital of the World". Birders have flocked to the south shore of Lake Erie during spring migration for as long as we've followed birding and for good reason. Most years, attendees will record every eastern warbler listed on the cumulative festival checklist during this awesome spring migration party that offers massive numbers 0f warblers, vireos, flycatchers, sparrows.... We know it's birdy, but we hope that most in attendance will sneak by the Optics Alley during your stay to say hello. The festival runs from May 8-17, 2026 and the Optics Alley is open each day from 10 AM - 5 PM.
Look for Kowa in the field, Kowa is once again sponsoring the guided field trips and the Morning Flight Count site at Metzgar Marsh, and is presenting digiscoping workshops on both weekends of the event. We'll see you out there!
