EDUCATE. CREATE. ADVANCE. Eliminating barriers and advancing equity in the dance industry worldwide.

Through intentional inclusion and equity, the Dance Institute of Washington increases diversity at every level of pre-professional Ballet training. We provide additional training in key genres to create a well-rounded dancer that can successfully enter the dance industry at large. Through this exemplary effort, DIW positively impacts racial and economic inequities in dance globally.

Art is subjective. That’s why exposure matters. Every artist brings unique experiences, culture, and perspective into their work, and so does the audience. The more we’re exposed to different voices and traditions, the more we challenge our own assumptions.

At DIW, we believe dance should expand perspectives, not limit them. When we see more, we understand more.

Excellence isn’t talent. It’s repetition.

The audience sees one performance.

What they don’t see are the hours spent repeating the same eight counts, refining every transition, and making one correction at a time.

Rehearsal isn’t about getting it right once.

It’s about doing it over and over until the movement becomes second nature, the artistry feels effortless, and the story can take center stage.

By the time the curtain rises, excellence isn’t something dancers hope for.

It’s something they’ve practiced. 🩰✨

Somewhere along the way, we started believing ballet was just for kids.

Maybe that’s because so many of us were introduced to dance as children.

But maybe that’s exactly why adults need it, too.

Dance has a way of reconnecting us with parts of ourselves that adulthood often asks us to set aside...our curiosity, our joy, our creativity, our willingness to try something just because it feels good.

At DIW, our adult ballet classes aren’t about becoming a professional dancer.

They’re about giving yourself permission to move, to learn, and to play again.

Our studios aren’t just for the next generation of dancers.

They’re for you, too. 🩰🖤

Come take a class with Ms. Barbra on Tuesdays and Thursdays...we’ll save you a spot at the barre.

They say summer flies by.

Dancers measure it differently.

In corrections.
In sore muscles.
In friendships.

One moment the barre disappears and you realize how much you’ve grown.

One more week. Let’s make it count. 🩰✨

Why not you?

At DIW, we don’t ask, “Why them?” We ask, “Why not you?”

Every child deserves the opportunity to discover what they’re capable of. And if something stands in the way—whether it’s access, resources, or opportunity—we believe it’s our responsibility to help remove that barrier.

Because dance isn’t reserved for a select few.

In our book, dance is for you. 🖤

There’s something about the music, the movement, and the community that makes you forget everything waiting for you outside the studio.

For one hour, you’re not thinking about work, deadlines, or stress.

You’re just dancing.
