Some places are more than just places. Some spaces hold something you can’t quite put into words. They hold memories. They hold energy. They hold tears and laughter and silence. They hold the collective exhale of thousands of people who walked through their doors looking for just a little more peace.
The Yoga House was one of those places.
My heart is absolutely broken that this beautiful sanctuary, in its current location, will be closing its doors at the end of this month.
Unfortunately, after a long-term water leak in the roof of the Paddock Arcade caused damage to the ceiling of the studio, the prospective new owner and Jake Johnson Properties have been unable to come to an agreement about who is responsible for repairing the damage.
I could make this post about that. I could talk about how heartbreaking it is that something that should have been as simple as taking care of a building has brought this chapter to an end. I could talk about the frustration.
But honestly, that isn’t where I want my energy to go.
Because when I think about The Yoga House, I don’t think about a damaged ceiling. I think about its heartbeat.
That heartbeat was all of YOU.
For years, those brick walls held something incredibly special. Thousands yes, thousands, of people from Watertown and communities all across the North Country stepped through those doors. And for an hour, maybe two, you could leave the outside world behind. You could put your phone away, set down your responsibilities, and stop being someone’s mom or dad, someone’s partner, someone’s employee, someone’s everything.
You could simply be.
You could breathe. You could move. You could sweat. You could shake. You could cry. You could laugh. You could lie completely still in the quiet after savasana and remember what it felt like to come home to yourself.
That room witnessed beginnings and endings. First yoga classes. Last classes before babies were born. People coming back after injuries. People finding their bodies again. People finding themselves again. Hard seasons. Beautiful seasons. Ordinary Tuesdays that somehow became sacred.
Somewhere along the way, The Yoga House became more than a yoga studio.
It became a sanctuary. A little refuge tucked away upstairs in the Paddock Arcade. A place with its own energy. Its own memories. Its own heartbeat.
I truly believe that heartbeat was created by every single person who ever rolled out a mat inside those walls.
So while I am heartbroken that the physical space is coming to an end, I don’t believe what we created there is ending.
You cannot put a community into a building. You cannot close a door and erase thousands of breaths.
The practice continues. The friendships continue. The memories continue. And most importantly, the community continues.
To every person who has ever walked through those doors, thank you.
Thank you for trusting me. Thank you for supporting my small business. Thank you for showing up on the days when you really didn’t feel like it. Thank you for filling that room with your energy, your stories, your laughter, your tears, your sweat, and your beautiful, human selves.
Thank you for giving The Yoga House its heartbeat.
You were always the heart of it.
And there is still more to come. 🤍
The prospective new owner is still planning to move forward with her vision of a beautiful boutique studio a space with a little something for every body, every soul, and every pair of bare feet that walks through the door.
So please stay tuned. There will be more information soon about the new location and the future plans for this community.
For now, I am going to practice what yoga has taught me: to honor what was, to feel what I feel, to release what I cannot control, and to trust that sometimes, the end of one chapter is simply the breath before the next one begins.
Thank you for giving this little sanctuary a heartbeat.
I will carry it with me wherever we go next. 🤍
