BE THE WILLOW, NOT THE OAK.

There’s an old parable about the oak tree and the willow.

The oak is big, strong, and rigid. The willow bends with the wind. When a powerful storm comes through, the willow bends and survives, while the oak, too rigid to yield, breaks.

The lesson? Strength without the ability to bend isn’t really strong at all.

As we age, strength training becomes increasingly important. But so does mobility.

I actually spend almost 30 minutes working on mobility before I lift anything heavy, or even moderately heavy.

Why? Because I don’t just want to be strong. I want to MOVE well. I want my strength to serve me for decades to come, not limit me.

Mobility isn’t just a warm-up before the real workout. It’s part of the training…if not the most important part.

Be strong. Stay mobile. Be the willow, not the oak.

We’re all adults here…and seasoned ones too.
Yet somehow we STILL compare ourselves to everyone else in the gym.
Someone lifts heavier.
Someone can do a pull-up.
Someone moves better.
Someone learns a skill faster.
And we immediately focus on what WE CAN’T DO.
But everyone is good at something.
And everyone has their kryptonite.
That’s why we PRACTICE at Bellbar. We don’t just “work out.”
Strength is a skill.
Celebrate what you CAN do. Keep practicing what you can’t.
Stop looking around the room.
Put your head down and get to work.

Hello Bellbar (a letter to my members from me!)

Why are you here?

Are you here to build strength and move better?

Or are you here to sweat, get tired, and check the “workout” box?

I’ll tell you why I created Bellbar.

After spending more years than I wanted in a commercial gym, I watched too many people show up, sweat, check the workout box—and year after year, nothing really changed.

That’s not what I wanted Bellbar to be.

These classes and my programming are intentionally different from what you’ll find in a big-box gym.

My coaches—and myself—aren’t here to be cheerleaders or Jillian Michaels boot camp instructors.

We’re here to make you better.

So if one of us points out something you’re doing “wrong,” it isn’t criticism. We’re asking you to pay attention, make an adjustment, and try again.

If I point out a flaw in your movement, it’s because I know you can move better.

If I ask you to slow down, it’s because faster isn’t always better.

If I ask you to use a lighter weight, it’s because heavier isn’t always stronger.

And if I keep correcting you over and over again (because I know I do this A LOT), it’s because learning to do something well takes practice. A LOT of it.

That is what BEING RESILIENT means to me.

Resilience isn’t avoiding hard things. It’s being willing to face them, struggle with them, and keep working anyway.

It’s trying again when your body doesn’t quite understand what your brain is asking it to do.

It’s being coachable enough to hear, “No. Try that again.”

It’s not giving up on a movement simply because it’s difficult.

Because moving well is hard.

Hello, sloooooow mountain climbers? Are you faking it or really moving as slow as we ask?

But you keep trying. You keep showing up.

That’s why we don’t just “work out” at Bellbar.

We practice. We learn. We get stronger. We become more resilient.

So the next time one of us asks you to try something again, know it's because we're trying to make you better.

To FLOOR PRESS or to BENCH PRESS...that is the question.
My preference? FLOOR PRESS.
I’m not anti-bench press. I’m pro-longevity, and I prefer the limited range of motion of the floor press for shoulder health.
My favorite…hands down…is the bridge floor press because I can drive my feet into the floor and create full-body tension—something I DON’T see enough when people bench press.
In the end, both are great strength exercises. It comes down to personal preference and what works best for YOUR body.

I came up in gyms in the ’80s and ’90s, when EVERYONE benched. Monday really is considered "International Bench Press Day", because every good bro starts off the week on the bench. I'm kidding...sort of.

What I can honestly say—I don't know ANYONE from that era who spent years heavy bench pressing who has good shoulders today.

To be clear, I’m not anti-bench press. I’m pro-longevity, and for the population we have here, I prefer the floor press. The majority of us are training to MOVE better AND be stronger. If you want both, consider the floor press as a better option.

The floor naturally limits the bottom range of motion. Your upper arm simply can’t travel as far behind your body as it can on a bench. For me, that makes it a more shoulder-friendly way to build serious pressing strength.

My favorite variation is the bridge floor press for a very specific reason...you get your glutes activated as well.

I want your entire body involved in the press. Your feet should be planted and actively pressing into the floor, creating tension through the legs, glutes, and trunk while the upper body does the pressing.

That connection to the floor is something I DON’T see nearly enough when people bench press. Too often, the legs are just along for the ride.

Remember, strength isn't just about moving more weight. It's about learning how to create tension and use your entire body as one connected system.

So the question, to BENCH or to FLOOR PRESS? The choice is DEFINITELY yours, but I did want you to understand my WHY.

Any questions, feel free to respond!

Here’s the REAL state of my body right now if you happened to see the gym post from this week...

Left carpal tunnel surgery: 8/28
Right: 2 weeks later on 9/11

I’ve had bilateral carpal tunnel for 15+ years, and eventually I couldn’t run from surgery anymore.

So for now, my training is mobility + dead bugs + elbow plank (hardstyle of course) + plus the big finale of single leg low box sit downs. That’s about it.

Instead of focusing on what I can’t do, I made a list of everything I CAN do and I’m working from there.

The good and bad? More core work.

Before this, the only dedicated core training I did was when I had to demo it. 😉

Soon: rebuilding the single-arm push-up.

As soon as I can grip a kettlebell again, believe me, I will be.

I had to take a dose of my own medicine. Less is more.
