11-year-old youth football player Jalen “Big J” Payne has tragically died after suffering a medical emergency during football practice in Columbus, Ohio.

Jalen was a member of the Columbus Raiders Elite youth football program. His mother, Jahlyn Payne, said he was at practice when the medical emergency occurred.

In the days since his death, hundreds of people have come together to remember him, including family, teammates, coaches, opponents and members of the local football community. A vigil was held at Krumm Park, where Jalen practiced and played.

Known as “Big J,” the 11-year-old was remembered by those around him as a gentle, loving kid who made an impact on far more people than his family realized.

His mother said seeing how many people showed up to honor her son left her overwhelmed by the support.
