The 4 year Olympic cycle method…
In 2021 I wasn’t too sure what I wanted to push and Hyrox came about while I was training in CrossFit at the time. Seemed a fun thing to have a go at.
Running 73 minutes in the men’s pro solo at Birmingham winning my age group then going on to placing second at world champs in vegas.
4 years on I’ve dabbled in the endurance world a lot more. Doing Ironmans, ultras and other various types of endurance events.
I built up a pretty decent engine. A couple years back I decided to go all in with Hyrox with no other events clashing into my training. Everything turned into becoming the best Hyrox athlete I can be.
The 4 year Olympic cycle method has taken me through 4 macro cycles of base > build > peak > recover.
Each year this has meant, everytime time I start a new macro cycle. My original baseline starts higher each year when I come back round to my base. Meaning I am starting at a higher level so I can rebuild new foundations.
When it comes to peaking for races in the later years of a 4 year Olympic cycle. The differences in your bodies physiology compared to the first years are mind blowing.
Just by stretching out the goals to years rather than months. You can work through plateaus, mental barriers & overcome poor races by just knowing you aren’t supposed to be at your best yet.
Your best is suppose to come at the end of the 4 year Olympic cycle.
Picture one in 2021 was my first year. Just about surviving the full Hyrox race without needing the medics. Picture two in 2025 racing in the elite 15 at world champs placing 4th at the age of 27.
What the stats show us in elite endurance sports, is that athletes are now peaking at a later age compared to your more traditional felid sports.
Jan Frodeno Ironman pro won his last elite race at the age of 40…
That means I have another 13 years competing and working through the 4 year Olympic cycle 3 times through plus one extra year for good measure 🐶
Do the maths. You might actually be capable of more than you think with the 4 year Olympic cycle approach!
