DID YOU KNOW? – AND NOW WE NEED YOUR HELP!

To all our customers who have seen humpback whales with us – or anywhere else in the world:

Do you have photos of humpback whales showing the underside of the tail fluke as almost completely black – or do your photos predominantly show white or strongly patterned black-and-white undersides?

This question is actually scientifically interesting. Humpback whales show noticeable differences in the coloration of their tail flukes and pectoral fins between populations in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Humpback whales in the Southern Hemisphere typically show a significantly higher proportion of white coloration. This is particularly striking on the underside of the tail fluke, which can be extensively white or strongly patterned in black and white. In some individuals, the contrast is extreme.

In humpback whales from the **Northern Hemisphere**, considerably darker flukes are more common, sometimes with substantially less white.

**But this is where it gets interesting: What do your own photographs show?**

We would love to compare them with you!

If you have ever photographed humpback whales – whether with Atlantic Ocean Safaris, on another trip, or anywhere else in the world – **please feel free to upload your photos in the comments.**

We are particularly interested in photographs where the **underside of the tail fluke is clearly visible.**

Perhaps together we can get a better impression of just how significant these differences really are – and whether your observations correspond with what has been described in the scientific literature regarding the different coloration of humpback whales from the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Show us your flukes!

We can't wait to see your photos!

During the krill season, extraordinary concentrations of humpback whales can occur from **St Helena Bay to Langebaan**. We regularly encounter groups of many dozens of whales – and on exceptional days, **several hundred humpback whales** feeding, diving and interacting together.

Join us on an exclusive expedition along the spectacular and remote **West Coast of South Africa**, between **St Helena Bay and Langebaan**.

Spend up to **6 hours a day on the ocean**, searching for superpods, dolphins, Cape fur seals, Mola Mola and whatever other surprises the Atlantic has in store.

EXPERT TOURS – THE SARDINE RUN 2027

bookings open!

Experience one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth with Expert Tours during our unique East and West Coast Sardine Run expeditions.

The Sardine Run is far more than following sardines. It is an extraordinary encounter with an entire ocean ecosystem in action. When conditions are right, enormous supergroups of hundreds or even thousands of common dolphins can gather and drive the sardines into spectacular baitballs. These fast-moving balls of fish attract a remarkable variety of predators, creating some of the most intense wildlife encounters imaginable.

From the surface and underwater, you may encounter Bryde’s whales hunting around the baitballs, powerful dusky and copper sharks, Cape fur seals, and vast concentrations of seabirds. Cape gannets and penguins can plunge into the water alongside dolphins and other predators, while the action continues beneath you.

With Expert Tours, you have the opportunity to experience the Sardine Run in two different oceans and two distinct time windows, exploring both the East Coast and West Coast and maximising your chances of encountering different marine wildlife and behaviours.

Every day on the Sardine Run is different. The ocean decides what appears, where the action develops and how close you can get. That unpredictability is what makes the experience so extraordinary.

Two coasts. Two oceans. Two time windows. One incredible Sardine Run adventure.
