Sardine Run South Africa with Expert-Tours.com

Today delivered yet another extraordinary and effervescent wildlife experience on the Wild Coast, north of East London near Kei Mouth.

The ocean was alive.

The Video edited with footage from last view days, show active bait balls formed throughout the days as vast shoals of sardines were relentlessly pursued by an impressive array of predators. Common dolphins worked tirelessly to herd the fish into tight formations, while Cape fur seals darted through the action with incredible agility. Above us, Cape cormorants and diving gannets rained from the sky, plunging into the bait balls with astonishing precision.

Below the surface, sharks patrolled the edges of the frenzy, waiting for their opportunity to strike. Adding to the spectacle were several Bryde's whales (Balaenoptera brydei), moving gracefully through the feeding activity and reminding us why South Africa's Sardine Run is considered one of the greatest marine wildlife events on Earth.

The energy was simply electric. Everywhere we looked there was movement, life and interaction. Dolphins charging through the bait balls, birds diving from above, whales surfacing nearby and sharks weaving through the action created a truly immersive experience that our guests will never forget.

Days like today are exactly why the Sardine Run is often called "The Greatest Shoal on Earth." It is raw nature at its finest, completely wild, unpredictable and breathtaking.

The SardineRun day:

The day started with a serious test of commitment. As we left the harbor off East London, a stiff 15-knot wind and 5-meter swells had some of the crew staring wide-eyed at the ocean ahead.
But the Wild Coast always rewards those who persevere.
Before long, magnificent humpback whales erupted from the sea, breaching parallel to our vessel in a breathtaking display. Soon after, dolphins appeared, racing through the waves. We followed in pursuit, and the action exploded. Fast-moving schools of fish formed bait balls, then another, and another, creating non-stop Sardine Run action throughout the day.
In blue water with around 19°C temperatures and good visibility, guests were treated to one unforgettable wildlife encounter after another. As if nature wanted to reward us even further, the wind gradually dropped, the swell settled, and by midday the ocean had transformed into a calm playground for marine life.
It was one of those special Sardine Run days that reminds us why this is considered one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth.
And the adventure isn't over yet — two more days of action await off East London!

Humpbacks breach

Humpback whale undertake one of the most extraordinary migrations on the planet, often described as a “heat run” that connects the icy high-latitude feeding grounds with the warm tropical breeding waters of the Indian Ocean, including regions around Madagascar.

As the seasons shift and polar productivity declines, these ocean giants leave nutrient-rich waters of the Arctic and other high-latitude feeding areas where they have spent months building up massive energy reserves on krill and small fish. What follows is a journey of thousands of kilometres through open ocean corridors, coastlines, and deep pelagic zones.

Far from being a silent transit, this migration is alive with behaviour and interaction. Males often sing complex, evolving songs that can travel vast distances underwater, functioning as both communication and display during the breeding season. Along the way, humpbacks breach in explosive displays, slap their pectoral fins, and roll through the swells—behaviours that may serve social, communicative, or simply energetic purposes.

The journey is also a stage for interspecies encounters. Pods of dolphins frequently join the whales, riding pressure waves and weaving through their paths in coordinated bursts of speed and curiosity. Occasionally, even vessels at sea become part of this moving ecosystem, witnessing close approaches, spyhops, and calm surface interactions that reveal the whales’ intelligence and awareness of their surroundings.

By the time they reach warmer waters near Madagascar and other tropical breeding grounds, the focus shifts entirely to courtship, mating, and calving. In these protected, warm environments, newborn calves are born into relatively calm seas before the long return journey begins once again.

This migration is not just travel—it is rhythm, survival, communication, and celebration across entire ocean basins.

Sardine Run South Africa with Expert-Tours
Today's adventure started with an unforgettable encounter. While snorkeling on an active bait ball, a curious Bryde's whale (Balaenoptera brydei) approached us closely, providing one of the most immersive wildlife experiences imaginable.
The species is named after Johan Bryde, a Norwegian businessman who established the first modern whaling station in South Africa in the early 20th century. Bryde's whales are among the most frequently encountered baleen whales along South Africa's coastline and are well known for their curiosity and their association with sardines and anchovies.
What made today's encounter particularly special was the whale's remarkable life story, visible on its body. Clear scars and rope marks along its port side showed evidence of a previous entanglement in fishing gear or ropes. Despite these injuries, the whale appeared healthy and strong, a testament to the resilience of these magnificent animals.
The action around the bait ball was spectacular, with common dolphins, sharks, seabirds and feeding whales creating another unforgettable day on the Sardine Run.
As with all Expert-Tours expeditions, our guests enjoyed an immersive, respectful and world-class wildlife experience in the heart of one of nature's greatest marine spectacles.
If you have ever dreamed of witnessing the Sardine Run, now is the time to plan ahead. We can recommend a variety of dates throughout the 2027 season, but availability is limited and many departures fill well in advance.

After ten fantastic days at seas, today topped it all!

We found the best bait ball of the past ten days in crystal-clear blue water with 20°C temperatures and up to 20 metres visibility. The action was simply nonstop. Sharks, thousands of dolphins, Bryde's whales, Cape fur seals, African penguins, gannets and petrels all joined the feast as sardines were pushed into tight bait balls beneath the surface.

Every dive revealed something new, every minute brought fresh action, and our guests couldn't stop smiling. Days like this remind us why the Sardine Run is considered one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth.

Happy clients, incredible encounters, and memories that will last a lifetime.

Over the past days, we had the pleasure of hosting a crew from Galileo in Munich, during what turned out to be one of the most exciting Sardine Run periods we have experienced in recent years.
From day one, the ocean delivered. Every morning, we headed offshore with high expectations, and almost every day the Indian Ocean exceeded them. Vast schools of sardines, anchovies and redeys were present throughout the area, attracting an incredible diversity of marine predators and creating daily opportunities for spectacular filming.
The common dolphins were undoubtedly the stars of the show. On several occasions, thousands of dolphins were actively herding and chasing sardines, creating fast-moving feeding events that stretched across the ocean. Their energy and precision were breathtaking to witness and provided the Galileo team with extraordinary footage.
The whale encounters were equally impressive. Throughout the expedition, we documented numerous Bryde's whales feeding on sardines, while humpback whales and minke whales frequently joined the action. One of the highlights was observing multiple whale species feeding in the same area, taking advantage of the abundance of prey. Such moments perfectly demonstrate the scale and complexity of the Sardine Run ecosystem.
Adding to the excitement were regular sightings of Cape fur seals, bottlenose dolphins, sharks, and African penguins, all participating in nature's greatest marine feeding spectacle. Every day brought something different, ensuring that no two outings were ever the same.
Perhaps the most remarkable moment of the entire production occurred when we encountered a rare white bottlenose dolphin among a pod of normally coloured dolphins. The sighting created enormous excitement on board and may become one of the most memorable sequences captured during the expedition.
What made these days truly special was not only the quantity of wildlife encounters but also their consistency. Day after day, the ocean delivered action, behaviour, and unforgettable moments, allowing the Galileo crew to capture the Sardine Run in all its raw beauty and intensity.
We would like to thank the entire Group of Divers, Jo, Achim and Angelika Theuer as well the Galileo team for their professionalism, enthusiasm, and passion. It was a privilege to share this extraordinary natural phenomenon with them, and we look forward to seeing the final production on screen.
if you like to join in our expeditions in 2027 we have diffrent dates and areas available!
