Saturday’s Caulfield Cup meeting kicked off the 2026 Sunshine Football Club Spring Carnival Tipping Competition, with 34 hopeful punters putting their reputations, and more importantly their money, on the line. It proved to be a tough day for favourite backers.
Race 1 immediately threw up a roughie, with King Snitz getting the cash. Jan Thom and Kathleen Hocking were the big winners and shot out of the gates faster than the rest of the field. Rumour has it both were already spending the winnings in their heads. Unfortunately, they forgot the wise words of Kenny Rogers: “You never count your money when you’re sitting at the table.” And he was right. It was all downhill from there, with neither troubling the scorers when it mattered.
Race 2 produced another double-digit winner when Quick Finish got the chocolates. Brendan Acreman, Xavier Hayes, Mark Carrol and Cam Magnusson all managed to find the winner. Some would call it good form analysis. Their partners can confirm that they know a thing or two about a quick finish. Unfortunately, the boys couldn’t build on the strong start and, like the ladies in Race 1, disappeared from contention.
Before we celebrate the winners, it would be remiss not to acknowledge those at the other end of the leaderboard. Joel Harrison scraped together $4.50 for the day. Possibly karma after some ill-advised comments about Roota’s punting ability. Roota himself was nowhere to be found, apparently too tight to enter last week’s competition. Hopefully someone spots him a few bucks before the carnival is over. Bernie Carrol battled his way to $3.10, just enough to avoid Tommy Millar’s $2.80. But neither could match Brendan Murphy in the race nobody wanted to win. Brendan collected the grand total of $0.00 to claim the Week 1 wooden spoon. Things can only get better from here- Surely.
At the other end of the leaderboard, things finally heated up in Race 8. Chris Van Berkel and Michael Argus both found Marfiano, pocketing more than $50 and jumping to the top with just two races remaining. Then came the Caulfield Cup.
With double points on offer, there was still time for someone to come from the clouds. When Kingswood swept home, only one tipster had managed to find it. And, in scenes few thought possible, Dougy Hart sprinted past the entire field and into top spot. His $64.90 collect was enough to get him home, with Dougy claiming the $264.00 first prize. Van held on for second and picked up $66.00 for his troubles.
Next stop is the Cox Plate at Flemington.
Hopefully we can get a few more tipsters involved, because the more who enter, the bigger the prize pool. And if you’re Brendan Murphy, at least you can sleep soundly knowing your entry fee went to the Footy Club rather than the TAB.
If you paid the $120.00 to be involved in all the marque races over the spring carnival please don’t forget to put your tips in. If you are particpating again and paying the weekly fee of $20.00 your returns will be added to your previous weeks’ returns as part of the special bonus win of a $200 Drink Card.
