National Volunteer Week 2026 - your year to volunteer! We thought we did pretty well in the last post covering two of our amazing volunteers in one post. In this post, we spoke with our U14 Girls JPL Manager Sam, who highlighted the amazing volunteer team effort of Coach Tegan and Assistant Coaches Jorja and Simon - what a team!
โ: Tell us about your volunteering and what you enjoy doing
โ
I volunteer as team manager for the Under 14 Girls Junior Premier League Team, which mostly involves organising communication, uniforms and scoring. Parents also help each week with scoring the games which we are very grateful for (I do bribe them with chocolateโฆ) Unofficially, my role also includes waiting on the players like royalty ๐-with fans, water spray bottles, sol de janeiro spray (haha) and emergency slick back brushes. I love being part of the team environment, having a laugh with the girls, and watching their confidence and friendships grow throughout the season. Alsoโฆ..one of the hidden perks of being manager is avoiding bench duty!
One of the best parts is our amazing Coach Tegan, and A/Coaches Jorja and Simon. The girls genuinely look up to them, and itโs been really special watching the positive influence they have both on and off the court. They bring so much encouragement, patience and energy to the team, and the girls absolutely admire them.
โ: What inspired you to get involved?
โ
: My kidsโ involvement in basketball inspired me to volunteer. I wanted to help out and be part of the team experience โ and somewhere along the way it became a weekly routine of basketball, group chats and carrying far too many bags into stadiums.
โ: What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering for the first time?
โ
: Just give it a go. You definitely donโt need to know everything to start โ everyone learns as they go. Basketball clubs rely on volunteers, and every little bit helps. Youโll meet great people, become part of the team community, and before long youโll somehow own a collection of bandaids, strapping tape hair ties!
What a story! Thanks to Sam (and Tegan, Jorja & Simon) for sharing their volunteering story & for all that you do.

National Volunteer Week 2026 - your year to volunteer! We asked two of our amazing volunteers, dynamic duo Kristy & Luke (our U14 D2 Girls Manager & Coach) to tell us their volunteer story.
We promise we didn't replace them with cookies (as per their photos), but they are some of the treats they organise for their team each season end (in addition to everything else!).
โ: Tell us about your volunteering and what you enjoy doing
โ
(Kristy): My role as manager is to collect and wash the uniforms, pass on important information to the parents of our team, organise rosters and players for games and to support the team and coach at each game. I really enjoy building connections with the team and parents.
โ
(Luke): As coach I teach and encourage the girls at training and during games to help further develop their basketball skills and love for the game. I really enjoy seeing the team improve their skills, winning and having fun together.
โ: What inspired you to get involved?
โ
: As parents we love watching Annie play basketball. Luke loved playing for Road Runners as a kid so itโs a great opportunity for him to give back to the club. We are at every game to support Annie and happy to volunteer our time to help her team mates too.
Thank you Kristy & Luke for all the work you do for your team and QDBA - two of our very special volunteers that keep us running - and inspiring the next generation of volunteers too!

Well done to our U18 BNSW Junior Premier League girls. A tough weekend for the team with injuries leaving them with only 7 players for the 4 games. A great effort by those girls remaining to stay competitive over the weekend.
Next round will be 30-31 May in Maitland.
We thank our team sponsor, M.H.O'Rourke Funeral Directors in Queanbeyan, for their ongoing support of our athletes.
