🏏💜 WOMEN & GIRLS WEEK – PLAYER SPOTLIGHT! 💜🏏

We’re celebrating the amazing women of Heidelberg Cricket Club by getting to know the players behind the game!

Next up, we have Clarissa Sparnenn!

🏏 1. How long have you been playing cricket, and what inspired you to start?

I started playing cricket with HCC in 2024. I wanted to give a team sport a go and find a sense of community, and I’m so glad I did! I’ve made some amazing friends, found a great group of people and picked up a new hobby along the way. Safe to say, I’m a little more invested than I probably expected to be!

💜 2. What’s your favourite thing about being part of the HCC women’s team?

Definitely the environment and the support! Everyone is so nice, welcoming and encouraging. The way everyone champions each other and rallies around one another is amazing. No matter what kind of day you’re having, you leave feeling cared for and encouraged. Whether you’ve had a great game or would rather forget how you batted, there’s always someone cheering you on. It’s such a lovely group to be part of, and I feel very lucky to have found it.

😂 3. What’s your funniest or most memorable cricket moment?

Taking my first wicket, a caught and bowled! I’d never caught a ball in a game before, so to actually catch one AND get a wicket was pretty special. Seeing the team run in cheering is something I’ll never forget.

Scoring my first four is another favourite. Looking into the stands and seeing everyone cheering was such a wholesome feeling. It’s the little moments like that which make all the hard work worth it.

✨ 4. What advice would you give to women or girls thinking about giving cricket a go?

Just give it a good hot crack! You absolutely don’t need to know what you’re doing when you start (I’m living proof of that). Cricket is such a great sport for beginners because, while it’s a team sport, there’s also an independent side to it. You’re the one batting, you’re the one bowling, and you learn to back yourself, keep your head up and keep trying, even when things don’t go to plan.

And most importantly, find a club like Heidelberg! Having a team that welcomes you, supports you and celebrates the little wins makes all the difference. You might come for the cricket, but you’ll stay for the people, the laughs, (and the end of season cricket trip)

**Another fantastic member of our Heidelberg women’s squad!
Bringing passion, determination and plenty of team spirit every time she steps onto the field. A valued part of our team, both on and off the pitch! 💛🖤

Next up, we have Mary “Scary Mary” Grant!

🏏 1. How long have you been playing cricket, and what inspired you to start?

5 seasons. 1986 & 1987; 2023-2026. I loved cricket as a kid and wanted to play competitively. Back in the day I used to walk 1.5 hours with my cricket gear to the nearest train station, catch a train for 15 minutes and walk another 25 minutes to the club (there weren’t many clubs with women’s teams!). In 2023, a friend asked if I could fill in and I was grateful because I’d always wanted to come back and play but needed a little push!

💜 2. What’s your favourite thing about being part of the HCC women’s team?

Everyone is really supportive. The atmosphere is fun and I love to tell a few stories and have a joke.

😂 3. What’s your funniest or most memorable cricket moment?

Watching the West Indies Cricket team play in the late 70’s and 80’s.

✨ 4. What advice would you give to women or girls thinking about giving cricket a go?

I would let them know that the club environment is usually very supportive. You don’t have to be a super star as there are several divisions to suit varying abilities and to promote development.

** A seasoned member of our 1st XI, bringing experience, leadership and a wealth of cricket knowledge to the team. 🏏
A fantastic role model for our younger players and an important part of our women’s program!

Next up, we have young Sophie Millen!

🏏 1. How long have you been playing cricket, and what inspired you to start?

This is my 6th season of cricket and I have been playing since I was 9. I joined because my friends from footy were going to play and I needed something to do in summer.

💜 2. What’s your favourite thing about being part of the HCC women’s team?

I like how excited everyone gets when someone does something well and I love how positive and encouraging everyone is.

😂 3. What’s your funniest or most memorable cricket moment?

Taking 3 wickets in my first senior women's game

✨ 4. What advice would you give to women or girls thinking about giving cricket a go?

Don't worry that you won't be good enough and it’s okay to play for fun and not competitiveness!

** Youngest in the squad, but already making her mark! 🏏💪 Bringing fresh energy, enthusiasm and a bright future to HCC’s women’s cricket program!

Next up, we have Clare ‘Merv’ Massey!

🏏 1. How long have you been playing cricket, and what inspired you to start?

I'm a late bloomer and only started at the end of 2023. I'm from a cricket crazy household but never actually gave it a go until a mate convinced me to come along to a Bergs training session and i've been hooked (some may say obsessed?) ever since.

💜 2. What’s your favourite thing about being part of the HCC women’s team?

The amazingly supportive environment. We welcome anyone with any skills (or none) and from any background, and the whole crew wants to help each other to learn and improve. You can give something new a go, make mistakes, develop skills and we've all got your back.

😂 3. What’s your funniest or most memorable cricket moment?

Winning the summer 2024 grand final for sure! I'd never won a grand final in any sport so it was an insane personal experience, especially since I took our first wicket. It was also a massive testament to how hard the team worked over the season.

✨ 5. What advice would you give to women or girls thinking about giving cricket a go?

I honestly couldn't recommend it highly enough. Cricket can be a great teacher of discipline, resilience and self control for younger people on top of developing a core group of supportive friends. If you're an oldie like me who's never played before, don't be surprised if you end up with a whole new group of mates in your team, in opposition teams and even across the state. Take it from me that you're never too old to give it a go!

** Bringing passion, energy and enthusiasm to every game! Merv’s positivity and love for cricket is infectious.
A fantastic teammate who gives her all, every single time!

First up, meet Jo Lewis!

🏏 1. How long have you been playing cricket, and what inspired you to start?

I started playing cricket in 2024 for HCC. I started playing to play cricket with my daughters.

💜 2. What’s your favourite thing about being part of the HCC women’s team?

The club is supportive and encouraging at all levels. It’s heaps of fun for all, training, game and socially.

😂 3. What’s your funniest or most memorable cricket moment?

Some would say my spectacular slow motion tumble after chasing a ball in the outfield. Too funny 😂
But for me, it was my catch against Laurimar that no-one expected me to hold. Surprised myself too, had to check it was still in my hand! Caught the captain and opening batter on 49 off 66 balls and when the whole team erupted with celebration she very happily congratulated me on my first ever catch!

✨ 5. What advice would you give to women or girls thinking about giving cricket a go?

If you want to play a fun team sport, with an awesome club and community, get some exercise and see development & improvement in yourself and team mates week to week, or like me, you want to play a sport with your girls - give cricket a go!

**We love you Jo! The enthusiasm and effort you bring to every game. And your epic sandwiches for morning tea 💛🖤

🏏💛🖤 Her game grows at Heidelberg Cricket Club… 🖤💛🏏

This week, we’re celebrating the incredible women and girls who make Heidelberg Cricket Club so special as part of Cricket Victoria’s “Women and Girls week”

What started 5 years ago, as a small group of 11 women giving cricket a go has grown into a thriving women’s program, filled with 40+ amazing players, friendships and a shared love of the game.

We’re incredibly proud of how far we’ve come and even more excited about where we’re heading! 💛🖤

From complete beginners picking up a bat for the first time to experienced players, our club continues to provide a place for women of all ages and abilities to get involved, build confidence, have fun and be part of something special.

Throughout the week, we’ll be shining the spotlight on some of our amazing players, sharing their stories and what they love most about cricket.

Here’s to the women who started it, the women who have joined along the way, and the next generation still to come! 💪🏏

Our Second XI got their first win on the board for the season, knocking off Mernda yesterday in a big all round performance.

And what a game from Garvit Chabra, leading from the front with both bat and ball.

89 runs with the bat before turning around and ripping through Mernda with a ridiculous 7/40, the third wicket features a pretty handy catch from our Prez 👀
