🏃 Marathon Fun Fact!
The first woman to finish the Boston Marathon had to hide in the bushes to even start.
In 1966, women weren’t allowed to enter. Bobbi Gibb (then 23) trained in secret, rode a Greyhound bus across the country, and on race morning hid in forsythia bushes near the starting line in Hopkinton, dressed in her brother’s Bermuda shorts, a swimsuit, and a hooded sweatshirt.
After the gun went off and about half the (all-male) field had passed, she jumped out and joined the race. The other runners quickly realized she was a woman and cheered her on. She finished in 3:21:40, ahead of two-thirds of the men, and was greeted at the finish by the governor of Massachusetts.
