Seeing young Mackay kids get the chance to learn, play and connect with some of Australia’s biggest cricket stars right here at Harrup Park is something pretty special!🥰

Our mission is to INSPIRE GREATNESS, and opportunities like this are exactly why. We hope these young cricketers walked away inspired by the experience, motivated by their heroes and believing that one day, they could be out there doing the same!

Arena CEO, Adrian Young, reflects on an historic week for Mackay, Great Barrier Reef Arena and the incredible community behind it.

“What a week for Mackay.

Our first-ever men’s Test match. Two sold-out days of cricket. A national and international spotlight on our city, and another huge step forward for Great Barrier Reef Arena.

Of course, we would have loved to see a couple more days of Test cricket! We prepared a great Queensland pitch that had bounce, carry and consistency. It rewarded GREAT bowling and provided a challenge the touring team weren’t able to overcome. The best bowling attack in the world showed us exactly what they were made of.

More importantly, it showed what Mackay is capable of. This venue has been built over generations by our community. Volunteers, staff, players, members and supporters have taken Mackay cricket from humble beginnings to hosting the Australian Test team.

To every volunteer and staff member who gave their time before and during this event; thank you. We simply wouldn’t be here without you.

Our ambition is not for this to simply be remembered as the biggest sporting event Mackay has ever hosted. Our ambition is for this Test to be remembered as the moment we showed Australia and the world exactly what Mackay is capable of, a moment that inspires greatness across our region between now and 2032.

We want to leave absolutely no doubt that Great Barrier Reef Arena is the best venue in regional Australia to host international cricket.

From a cricket club formed in 1867, to Test cricket in 2026 to Olympic cricket in 2032.

That’s the journey we are on, and we are only just getting started!”
