💭 “But I’m active all day at work… surely that counts as strength training?”

I hear this more often than you might think — and the answer is your activity absolutely counts, but it’s doing a different job.

Being on your feet, lifting, carrying, walking and moving throughout your working day is fantastic for keeping you active. But being physically active and training your body to become stronger are not the same thing.

Your body is incredibly good at adapting. When you perform the same tasks regularly, it becomes efficient at doing them. Resistance training provides a deliberate, progressive stimulus that challenges your muscles in ways everyday activity often doesn’t.

💪 Your job uses the strength you already have.
Resistance training gives your body a reason to build and maintain more of it.

And that strength isn't just for lifting weights.

It’s for carrying the shopping.
Getting up from the floor.
Doing your job with greater ease.
Enjoying your hobbies.
Maintaining your independence.
And continuing to live life your way.

We don’t train for the gym. We train for life.

After 40, exercise shouldn’t only burn calories. It should build something.

Muscle.
Strength.
Power.
And the loading capacity your bones need to adapt.

Walking is excellent for cardiovascular health, daily movement and overall health. Keep walking.

But walking and progressive strength training do different jobs.

Resistance training provides a much greater stimulus for maintaining and building muscle and strength. It also places mechanical load on the skeleton — an important stimulus for maintaining or improving bone mineral density.

So if you’re walking 10,000 steps a day, that’s great.

Don’t stop walking. Add strength.

After 40, training becomes less about how many calories you burned — and more about what you’re building and protecting for the decades ahead.

After 40, what you don’t protect, you can gradually lose.

With aging and inactivity, muscle mass and strength decline. In inactive adults, muscle mass has been estimated to decrease roughly 3–8% per decade after age 30, with losses accelerating later in life.

For women, the menopause transition can also accelerate bone loss, increasing osteoporosis and fracture risk.

Aging also affects tendons, ligaments, connective tissue, joint function, balance and power — all part of the physical reserve we rely on to stay capable and independent.

The solution: progressive resistance training, adequate protein and consistent weight-bearing activity.

We can’t stop aging. But we can build more muscle, strength and physical reserve for the decades ahead.

What are you choosing to build yourself from?

This picture is exaggerated — but the message behind it is powerful.

Every day, we make choices that influence how we feel, how we move and how well our body can support us through life.

This isn’t about being perfect.
It isn’t about never eating a burger, having dessert or enjoying a meal out.

It’s about what we do most of the time.

Nourish your body.
Move it.
Challenge it.
Build strength.
Give it rest.
And still enjoy your life.

Healthy living doesn’t have to be hard or restrictive. Often, it starts with a few small changes repeated consistently until they simply become part of who you are.

And when most of your choices support your health, there is absolutely room for the treats, celebrations, holidays and meals shared with family and friends.

We only get one body.

Look after it so it can keep carrying you towards the people, experiences and adventures that matter to you. 💜

The choice is yours.
Not perfection. Not punishment.
Just choosing, more often than not, to take care of YOU.

Your future self will thank you.

🍰 Can you enjoy the sweet treat and still work towards your goals? Absolutely.

This topic came up with a client today. She enjoys having a pastry after her training session once a week — and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Rather than focusing on “don’t eat the pastry”, we talked about what could come first.

After training, having a nutrient-dense meal containing protein, fibre, quality carbohydrates and healthy fats gives your body valuable nutrients for recovery and helps you feel satisfied.

Then, if you still want the pastry — enjoy it. 😊

Having a sweet treat on its own, particularly when you’re hungry, can be less satisfying and may leave you looking for more food soon afterwards. Eating a balanced meal first can slow digestion and the absorption of carbohydrates, helping create a steadier blood glucose response and keeping you satisfied for longer.

This can be particularly helpful when you’re working towards weight-management goals — not because you need to eliminate the foods you enjoy, but because you’re setting yourself up to make choices from a place of nourishment rather than hunger.

It’s not about restriction.
It’s not about being perfect.
It’s about learning how to make food work with your body and your goals.

💜 Nourish first. Treat second. Enjoy both.

Small choices, repeated consistently, can make a big difference.

Pilates can be an excellent part of your routine. But feeling challenged isn’t the same as giving your bones the loading stimulus they need.

As we move through our 40s and beyond, preserving muscle and bone becomes increasingly important. That means progressively challenging the body with resistance that is heavy enough for us — not simply choosing exercise that feels hard.

The LIFTMOR trial found that 8 months of supervised high-intensity resistance + impact training improved lumbar spine bone mineral density by 2.9% in postmenopausal women with low bone mass, while the control group declined by 1.2%.

The takeaway isn’t to stop Pilates.

Keep the Pilates. Add the weights. 💪

Your bones respond to load — and progressive strength training deserves a place in the plan.
