High Level Canoes and Kayaks
Paddling season is almost here!! Don’t hit the water without these 5 essentials to stay legal and safe (per Transport Canada rules for kayaks in BC): 🚣♂️
1. Personal Flotation Device (PFD):
One Canadian-approved, properly sized PFD/lifejacket for every person on board. Wear it—it’s the #1 lifesaver if things go sideways.
2. A Paddle:
Your main propulsion tool! A reliable paddle is absolutely necessary to maneuver, control your kayak, and get back to shore safely. (No paddle = no kayaking—simple as that.)
3. Sound-Signalling Device
A whistle (pealess so it works in and out of the water) clipped to your PFD. Crucial for calling for help in fog, emergencies, or low visibility.
4. Buoyant Heaving Line
At least 15m (50ft) of floating rope you can throw! Key for rescues without putting yourself at risk. Even more essential on the river!
5. Bailer or Bilge Pump
To scoop out water if you swamp. (Sit-on-tops sometimes get exemptions, but most touring kayaks need this to stay afloat and legal.) A good bailer could be the difference between spending 10 minutes or 2 in cold water bailing your kayak so you can get back in safely.
**Bonus** for low-light adventures: A watertight flashlight (or navigation lights) if you’re out at dawn, dusk, night, or in fog — stay visible and avoid fines!
These cover the federal basics for most kayaks in BC and Canada… Always check conditions, tell someone your plan, and paddle
💧 Blackwater tip: Gear up right so you can focus on the paddle, not penalties!

The Blackwater Tribute 135 has ARRIVED 🙏🙏
Built for paddlers who want real performance in an inflatable, the Tribute 135 delivers stability, speed, and confidence on everything from flatwater cruises to moving rivers. With a rugged drop-stitch floor, responsive hull shape, and plenty of room for gear (or an extra paddling partner) this kayak punches way above its weight class.
Easy to transport. Quick to set up. Hard to outgrow.
If you want an inflatable that doesn’t feel like a compromise, the Blackwater Tribute series is your best bet !
