Monday March 30 2026 was a super fun flying day!

I got out a bit after the crowd of 30+ pilots were already on launch.

A nice fellow in a Jeep was headed up the road and offered me a ride right into launch.

No hiking needed.

I had spent the past two weeks in Savona training new pilots and had been flying in 20C weather so my kit had been stripped down to just warm weather gear. Mistake #1!

I launched with no balaclava, good ski gloves and my Rayban Meta glasses and was soon in the clouds at 1400 metres. My glasses fogged up and I had to put them away. The NOVA Ion 7 Lite flies very well in strong conditions, not a tip tuck.

My hands soon turned to ice blocks as it was -8C at cloud base.

And my face and ears were getting very cold.

I kept flying out to the valley hoping to descend and warm up but no luck getting below 1000 metres. Idiot lift abounded.

Meanwhile the properly dressed pilot types headed west towards Mission and then back towards Hope, crossing the Fraser Valley several times before landing back at Riverside LZ.

Another group of pilots launched in Squamish off the Chief and headed NW over the Tantalus range and further north to Whistler and Pemberton.

Some flights were easily 100 km long.

I am rearranging my kit today to include heated gloves, balaclava and ski goggles for the next big day.

Congrats to all the XC pilots that flew big distances.

Note to self:

wear heavily insulated mitts
wear a balaclava
Wear ski goggles

It’s flipping cold at Woodside in the spring!

Once I hit cloudbase I was frozen.

I flew out to Kilby to descend but it was lofty everywhere.

Later as I descended around launch contemplating a top landing to warm up I was getting hailed on and dust devils were observed on launch.

I flew out to Riverside to defrost after a few hours.

I got to 1500 metres several times. Pilots that headed west got to 1700 metres.

Finished a trip to Tenancingo Mexico.

Great conditions at Pichacho and La Malinche.

Despite inverted conditions we got to 3250 metres most days.

I was flying a NOVA Ion 7 Lite glider and it performed very well.
