β οΈ SAFETY ALERT: The Mississippi River is moving MUCH faster than usual! Conditions are not normal for August.
The Mississippi River Power Corp. is reporting fast, high river flows following recent heavy rains, and water levels are still rising.
Here is what you need to know:
π Current flow: 58 CMS (cubic metres per second) and rising
π Typical August flow: 14 CMS
π¨ The reality: Water flow is currently more than 400% higher than normal.
Strong, fast-moving currents are now present in areas that are usually calm this time of year. Even if the river looks peaceful from the shoreline, the underwater current is moving significantly faster than usual.
If you're out canoeing, kayaking, or paddleboarding:
π¦Ί Wear your PFD/lifejacket at all times.
β οΈ Don't underestimate the current. Conditions can become difficult to manage very quickly.
π§ Know your limits. Consider holding off until flows come down.
π Stay cautious near the shoreline, especially with kids and pets.
Stay safe out there, paddle smart, and share this with anyone planning a trip to or around the water!

Today, the Municipality of Mississippi Mills joins communities around the world in recognizing World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.
This year's theme 'Trapped Behind the Scam,' highlights the evolution of human trafficking, including through scam centres, a rapidly expanding form of trafficking in which transnational organized crime groups exploit and coerce people into carrying out industrial-scale financial fraud. Many victims are deceived with false job offers and subjected to threats, abuse and forced labour.
Human trafficking is a serious crime and a violation of human rights that affects people of all ages, genders and backgrounds. By raising awareness, learning the signs and supporting survivors, we can all play a role in preventing exploitation and helping create safer communities.

Here's what you need to know for the fireworks tonight (July 30) π
π When is the show?
The fireworks are set off at dusk for the best viewing experience, around 9 p.m., and lasts for 10-15 minutes.
π Where can I watch the show?
Join us at Gemmill Park on the hillside, or use our accessible viewing platform in the park. Locals are encouraged to walk to the park. Parking is available by the John Levi Community Centre.
β For safety reasons, visitors cannot watch the fireworks show from Metcalfe Geoheritage Park on Almonte Street. The park will be closed off with signage in place to secure the launch site. The fireworks cannot be set off if there are people in Metcalfe Geoheritage Park.
π§ Are there road closures I should be aware of?
For your safety, a portion of Almonte Street near Metcalfe Geoheritage Park will be closed 10 minutes prior to and during the fireworks show, lasting for no more than half an hour. The fire department will be on-site to provide direction.
