AcroDance cartwheels end square. There is seems to be some confusion about this topic. Let’s analayze. As you see from this teen here, when the dancer lands the cartwheel the alignment is square, knee over toe, foot completely on the line tracking square. Once it’s landed, and only once it’s fully tracking then the dancer plies and transfers to face the front. Why do the transfer? To maintain performance projection, to engage with the audience. Contrasted that to gymnastics where the audience is stadium seating and choreography is pleasing from all four directions. Dance isn’t viewed from the back. We have to reconnect right away. The confusion is that sometimes we see dancers rotating too soon to plie and transfer and it seems like we end facing front. That is not correct. Looking at this younger dancer we can see a micro adjustment off square here, she hasn’t landed fully square before transferring. So we’ll work to make sure that alignment is clear particularly before moving into aerials. Looking back at the teen we can clearly see, this is square. We land cartwheels square and then and only then, do we transfer forward to project.
