We meet twice per week to share the joy that is the life of Karate. The Philosophy of Jung Shin Kempo is first and foremost a method of self-defense. The discipline and respect taught through the lessons are used in such a way as to develop students to be non-violent in nature. The idea stressed in the practice of the techniques is that students shall not make any aggressive move at all to initiate conflict, therefore a student’s thoughts should be that of defense only. Based on this principle, students learn the paying of respect to each other and to the instructor with the use of a customary bow, as the first major lesson. This first important lesson instills an overall good and gentle nature into the students. The practice of aggressive skills instills confidence in the students showing them that they can learn to defend themselves if necessary, yet they are taught that to be non-violent is the bravest and highest skill of all. This is not a “new” style, but merely a modern approach to the practice and execution of techniques and philosophies. The actual “system” that we use is a blend of useful techniques from Tae Kwon Do, Karate-Do, Chuan Fa, Hap Ki Do, Kempo-Jitsu, and Kickboxing. Our approach is that of practicality, and usefulness. The techniques are executed from a guard or combat-ready position, no longer from the traditional elongated forward stances or deep squatting horse-riding stance. Posynick has formulated the practice of useful techniques into a logical and effective “system” which is easy to learn and yet still effective to use. Again we are not creating a new style but merely a modern approach to the application of classical styles.
