On Truth and Reconciliation Day, we took the opportunity to visit the Buffalo Jump just outside of Fort Macleod. Although we've lived here for many years, some of us have never gone!
It was such a lovely day of learning and reflecting on the past. The Buffalo were nearing extinction because of the ignorance and arrogance of the colonizers. They assumed that the resources on this earth were endless and put there for people's consumption. Unfortunately, this sentiment is still alive and well today.
At the Jump we also reflected on the ongoing legacy of residential schools on our Indigenous family, friends, and neighbors. Just a few decades ago, the last residential school was closed. As with the Buffalo, the colonizers tried to eradicate the Indigenous people. But like the Buffalo, their strength and resilience was too great to break.
As settlers, we will continue to learn and do our part to disrupt the disrespect to both our earth's resources and our indigenous friends, family, and neighbors. We are grateful for the opportunity to live and work on this land that we now call Canada🧡🟠🟧
