As part of a special series published during the Nijmegen Four Days Marches in July, the Dutch newspaper De Gelderlander ran an article on the “Nijmegen experience” of some international walkers. The article notably featured an interview with three of the organizers of your Maple Leaf March. Below is the English translation of the article.

**********

“Are you going to Nijmegen?”

Dominique Desrosiers and Patrick Henrichon heard that question for the first time nine years ago, during a training walk in the middle of nowhere in a forest near Ottawa. A stranger struck up a conversation with them while they were tending to their feet. It goes to show just how well-known “Nijmegen” is.

“You recognize a 4Daagse walker when you see one,” says Steve Lyon Kaufman with a laugh. He first took part in the 4Daagse as a soldier based at camp Heumensoord. Afterwards, he thought: “I will never do this again.” Yet, he returned as a group leader and has been walking as a civilian for years now. He met Dominique and Patrick during his training sessions.

Dominique and Patrick both work for the Canadian Department of National Defence, where they often heard about this “crazy four-day walk” in the corridors. Patrick even wrote a speech for the Chief of the Canadian Armed Forces in which he wished the soldiers heading to Nijmegen success. When Dominique discovered that civilians could participate too, they signed up.

Their preparation begins in the winter. At first, they train in snow and temperatures as low as - 28 degrees; later, they train in summer heat exceeding 35 degrees, traversing hilly and rocky terrain. “That way, you’re prepared for anything,” says Steve. The Seven Hills? “We call it the Seven Speed Bumps.”

For Patrick, training mostly takes place on weekends. “My girlfriend looks after our two young children largely on her own during that time. The 4Daagse is not only about the walkers, it’s also about the people back home and the sacrifices they make.”

The long journey to Nijmegen also demands a lot from the Canadians. The flight takes about ten hours, yet jet lag doesn't bother them much. Dominique: “It’s six hours earlier in Canada, so you wake up six hours earlier, too. That’s ideal when you have to get up at 2:30 a.m.”

Why do they come back every year? Steve doesn’t have to think long. “Camaraderie, seeing friends again, and the sense of achievement when you make it.” Dominique sums it up: “It’s easy to get hooked on the Four Days Marches. You’re physically tired, but you get a mental boost. Plus, you have plenty of stories to tell back home.” Patrick adds with a laugh: “And blisters to show...”
