Just a reminder that there is no class tomorrow (April 25) because we will be at the provincials!

It was great to see such excellent performances from our fencers at this tournament! I saw some epic comebacks, some snappy toe hits, some daring attacks in preparation ("interrupting sheep" style!), and even some inspiring resilience in the face of some devastating (and repeated) blade problems! Thanks for making it such a great tournament!

This was a great showcase of some of the really important early supporters of fencing in New Brunswick, and we were especially proud to have our founder, Rick Gosselin honoured as one of the first inductees!

𝗙𝗘𝗡𝗕 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗲 – 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗲𝘀

At the end of the 2025 New Brunswick fencing season, the inaugural FENB Hall of Fame dinner and presentation occurred. Four fencers were honored with awards to recognize their fantastic passion for the sport of fencing, and their contributions towards making the sport more accessible and successful within New Brunswick.

𝗔𝗹𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗞𝗻𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲
FENB Hall of Fame Inductee: 2025
The provincial fencing association was officially established as the New Brunswick Fencing Association in 1969 and its founding president was Alfred Knappe.
Alfred Knappe began fencing while a teenager in the city of Hof in West Germany in 1950. In the spring of 1955 he emigrated to Canada and settled in Fredericton. In 1966 he was invited to coach at the newly formed fencing club at the University of New Brunswick where he was working at the time. In1967 Alfred represented NB at the National Fencing Championships in Montreal and at the Eastern Canadian Championships at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia in 1968. Here he met Gabriel Timar who had just started a club in Saint John. A club had also started up in St. Andrews. Alfred gathered representatives from these three clubs in 1969 with the result that the New Brunswick Fencing Association was born and Alfred was elected as its first President.
Awarded posthumously, and graciously received by his daughter, Kelsie.

𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝗹
FENB Hall of Fame Inductee: 2025
Barbara Daniel began coaching in Halifax in 1975 while continuing to train as a competitive foil fencer. She competed for NS at the Canada Games in Brandon (1975) and Lethbridge (1979). Over the years, she has founded six fencing clubs; most recently the Damocles Club of Fredericton from which she just retired.
Barbara has coached at Canada Games in 1991 & 1995 for Nova Scotia, and in 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2013 for New Brunswick. She served as National Women’s Epee coach at the 1993 FISU Games in Buffalo,1995 World Championships in the Netherlands and 1997 FISU Games in Sicily. She was the weapon leader for the National Women’s Epee program from 1997 to 2000 and was Team Manager at the 1994 Junior World Championships in Mexico, the 1999 World Championships in Seoul and the 2001 Junior World Championships in Poland.

𝗥𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗚𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻
FENB Hall of Fame Inductee: 2025
New Brunswick’s first fencing tournament was the New Brunswick Championships held at the Fredericton YMCA on March 21, 1970 in conjunction with the New Brunswick Winter Games. It was a men’s foil event involving six fencers: Rick Gosselin, Bob Pottle and Bill MacDonald from the Saint John YMCA club and Alan Muzzerall, Kevin Montague and Brian Grimley from Fredericton. Rick Gosselin emerged as the first NB Provincial Champion.
In addition to being New Brunswick’s first fencing champion in 1970, Rick twice represented our province at the Canada Winter Games. He found his calling as a coach, guiding the provincial fencing team at four Canada Winter Games.

𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁
FENB Hall of Fame Inductee: 2025
Kara Grant is a two-time Olympic modern pentathlete from Canada. She is one of the first female Canadian modern pentathletes, along with Monica Pinette, to compete at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. In 1999, Grant received a qualifying berth for the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where she took home the bronze medal for her national team. Following her well-accomplished result, she spent five years of training and competition before was able to break through into the international scene in 2002, when she added her first individual bronze medal at the Pan American Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Temple de la renommée d’Escrime NB – Intronisés 2025

À la fin de la saison 2025 d’escrime au Nouveau-Brunswick, le tout premier souper et cérémonie du Temple de la renommée d’Escrime NB a eu lieu. Quatre escrimeurs ont été honorés pour leur passion exceptionnelle envers ce sport et pour leurs contributions à rendre l’escrime plus accessible et florissante dans la province.

𝗔𝗹𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗞𝗻𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲
Intronisé au Temple de la renommée d’Escrime NB : 2025
L’association provinciale d’escrime a été officiellement fondée en 1969 sous le nom de l’Association d’escrime du Nouveau-Brunswick, avec Alfred Knappe comme président fondateur.
Alfred a commencé l’escrime à l’adolescence dans la ville de Hof, en Allemagne de l’Ouest, en 1950. Au printemps 1955, il a émigré au Canada et s’est installé à Fredericton. En 1966, il a été invité à entraîner au nouveau club d’escrime de l’Université du Nouveau-Brunswick, où il travaillait à l’époque. En 1967, Alfred a représenté le N.-B. aux Championnats nationaux d’escrime à Montréal, puis aux Championnats de l’Est du Canada à l’Université St. Francis Xavier en Nouvelle-Écosse en 1968. Elle a été entraîneuse nationale de l’équipe féminine d’épée aux Jeux FISU de 1993 à Buffalo, aux Championnats du monde de 1995 aux Pays-Bas et aux Jeux FISU de 1997 en Sicile. Elle a dirigé le programme national féminin d’épée de 1997 à 2000 et a été chef d’équipe aux Championnats du monde juniors de 1994 au Mexique, de 1999 à Séoul et de 2001 en Pologne.

Le tout premier tournoi d’escrime du Nouveau-Brunswick a été les Championnats provinciaux, tenus au YMCA de Fredericton le 21 mars 1970 dans le cadre des Jeux d’hiver du Nouveau-Brunswick. Il s’agissait d’une épreuve masculine de fleuret avec six participants : Rick Gosselin, Bob Pottle et Bill MacDonald du club YMCA de Saint John, ainsi qu’Alan Muzzerall, Kevin Montague et Brian Grimley de Fredericton. Rick Gosselin est devenu le tout premier champion provincial du N.-B.
En plus de ce titre, Rick a représenté deux fois la province aux Jeux d’hiver du Canada. Il a trouvé sa vocation comme entraîneur, dirigeant l’équipe provinciale d’escrime lors de quatre éditions des Jeux d’hiver du Canada.

𝗞𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁

Kara Grant est une pentathlonienne moderne canadienne ayant participé deux fois aux Jeux olympiques. Elle est l’une des premières femmes canadiennes à concourir en pentathlon moderne aux Jeux olympiques d’été de 2004 à Athènes, en Grèce, aux côtés de Monica Pinette. En 1999, elle a obtenu une place de qualification pour les Jeux panaméricains à Winnipeg, au Manitoba, où elle a remporté une médaille de bronze avec l’équipe nationale. Forte de ce succès, elle a poursuivi cinq années d’entraînement et de compétitions avant de percer sur la scène internationale en 2002, en remportant sa première médaille individuelle de bronze aux Championnats panaméricains à Rio de Janeiro, au Brésil.
