Our U14 Boys Team have qualified for the England South East Group Final 🥳 💙 👏

The Kent U14s were warmly welcomed to Knebworth GC for their final triangular league match against Essex and Hertfordshire.

We knew that a victory against Essex, combined with avoiding defeat against a strong Hertfordshire side, would secure qualification for the England South East Group Final.

We made an excellent start against Essex, taking an early lead in the majority of matches. The boys continued to build on that advantage, with a strong finish seeing Kent run out comfortable 7–1 winners.

The matches against Hertfordshire were always going to be much tighter and evenly contested. None of the matches had more than two holes between the players after the front nine, setting up a tense finish.

It was fitting that the league would ultimately go down to the final match on the final hole. With one match still on the course, the overall score stood at 3½–3½, with the final game all square on the 18th.

With a number of spectators now watching, both boys faced a huge amount of pressure. Both had to play recovery shots for their second, with our player coming up just short of the green and finding a large hollow. That gave Hertfordshire the advantage, and their subsequent par proved too much, and we lost the match 4½–3½.

However, our outstanding 7–1 victory over Essex proved crucial. Kent topped the league on matches won and, as a result, have secured qualification for the England South East Group Final, which will be played back at Knebworth GC on 13th September.

A fantastic achievement by the boys, who have now reached the final for the third consecutive year. We wish them the very best of luck as they look to finish the season on a high.

It was the English Girls’ U14/U16 Stroke Play Championship at Gog Magog Golf Club where 144 girls from 18 nations played for the top spots on the beautiful Wandlebury Course over three days.

After 36 holes, there was a cut for the best 40% of both age groups to play the final 18 holes on day 3.

The championship was organised by England Golf, supported by a team of referees under the lead of Chief Rules Official Alan Thomson.

It was fantastic to see so many girls play so well and a privilege to help them with some of the rulings, of which there weren’t many.

The course was set up beautifully, there were no penalty areas, and the pace of play was managed well.

Kent Senior Women's Team friendly match report 📜

On a very pleasant day for golf, with sunny spells and light winds, Kent senior women hosted Surrey for a friendly match at Wildernesse GC. We were very pleasantly surprised to find a golf course with green grass on the fairways, a rarity in this exceptionally dry summer. Indeed, after some heavy showers the day before, there were even some damp patches!

In a very tightly contested match with 2 matches finishing on 17 and the other 2 going all the way down 18, Surrey emerged as the winners by 3 matches to 1. The difference was nothing more than a couple of putts here and there.

We like to use the friendly matches as development experiences for those players who are knocking on the door of playing on the league team and also for those who we hope may develop into being one of those players.

Our thanks go to Wildernesse GC for hosting the match, presenting the course in great condition considering this difficult summer and for looking after us very well in the clubhouse.

John Young Memorial Trophy match report 🏆

The annual Kent Golf v the GCMA (Golf Club Managers' Association) match for the John Young Memorial Trophy was once again played at Littlestone Golf Club on Thursday 20th August. John Young was a Vice President of Kent and also a member of the GCMA.

As ever, all matches were played in a wonderful spirit, with the overall result a very friendly ‘half’ with the GCMA again retaining the trophy dating back to their win in 2024. A great day was had by all in beautiful summer sunshine, if just a little bit ‘breezier’ conditions than usual.

Our sincere thanks to Littlestone GC for again kindly hosting this annual event at what was John’s home course.

Also, thanks to Gusbourne for kindly providing a sparkling wine tasting for attendees.
