Last week we said a massive thank you and a sad good bye to Sue Ellis who is hanging up her netball hat and retiring.
I’m sure everyone has a special netball memory of Sue at the courts and she will be sorely missed.
For anyone who missed our presentation:
We would like to celebrate someone who embodies the very soul of netball in our community. It is often said that every league needs a 'Sue Ellis'—but we are incredibly lucky, because right here in Ashford, we have the real deal."
"For well over a decade, Sue has graced the courts of Ashford and beyond, wearing many hats but always carrying the same trademark kindness. Between 2009 and 2019, she served diligently on the Ashford Netball League committee, stepping into crucial roles as our duty of care representative and youth liaison.
As a C-award umpire, Sue is the definition of fair and consistent. But what truly sets her apart is her mentorship. She is one of the league’s absolute favourite umpires—not just because she calls an excellent game, but because of what happens after the final whistle. Sue is always there with a word of encouragement, offering positive feedback and invaluable tips to our newer teams who are just finding their footing. And when the unexpected happens on court, her calm, sensitive approach to handling injuries has brought comfort to many anxious players."
"Sue’s impact doesn't stop at the competitive whistle. In recent years, she has been the absolute driving force behind Walking Netball in Ashford, bringing the joy of the sport to women of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
When the world shut down during lockdown and netball courts stood empty, Sue refused to let her community drift apart. Knowing that some of these women were completely isolated at home, she worked tirelessly to keep the Walking Netball community connected, thriving, and supported. She has kept that fire burning bright, inspiring so many to keep moving and keep playing. Combined with her dedication to coaching the next generation—most recently supporting the young players from The John Wallis Academy—Sue ensures that netball in Ashford has both a rich history and a bright future."
"Sue’s incredible dedication hasn't just been felt on our local courts; it has resounded across the entire county and region.
In 2023, Kent Netball recognized her unparalleled service by awarding her their highest honour: the Joyce Crust Salver. And the accolades didn't stop there. Her trailblazing volunteer work earned her the prestigious Pioneer Award for Kent at the Regional ONE Awards. From representing the county on the court with the Over 40s team, to sustaining the Ashford Amblers, her legacy is woven into the very fabric of our sport.
It is hard to find a netballer in our League who hasn’t benefited from her guidance, her safety, or her sheer warmth.
Please join me in thanking Sue for all she has done and wish her well in her retirement from netball.
