Thank you to the Belfast Telegraph and all the sponsors for the Awards ceremony last night. I have personally spent many years running round the Boulevard with a double or single buggy 🤣. Thank you to the Buggy Club mummies who nominated me for the local hero award. It was such an honour just to be nominated.

I started Buggy Club nearly 13 years ago to help mums get active after having babies. I’ve always been passionate about helping people get into athletics, so Buggy Club was a way of helping mums get active safely with their babies. The idea was anyone could join whether they used to run before having babies or if they were totally new to running. Everyone is different, heals differently and can push their bodies differently. We want to help mums get strong and get back to what they want to do whether that’s running park run, marathon training, playing hockey, Gaelic, rugby or CrossFit.
We understand that being a new mum or a mum for the 4th or 5th time is hard. We want to support them and their mental health as well as their physical health. We get the sleepless nights, the teething, the endless nappies and washing and we want to help the mums navigate these things and know that we have all went through them. At Buggy Club we have mums at all stages of their fitness journey, like Ailis who didn’t run before kids, she took up Buggy Club with baby number 1 and hasn’t looked back since. Now on baby number 4 she a marathon run, avid park runner, was park run organiser for a long time and now one of the organisers of the new Carryduff 10k. Ailis is a big promoter of Buggy Club and people being active.

Mummy guilt is unfortunately very real and sometimes we will just take buggies when the babies are crying to let the mums do a lap of the track and not have to worry. If you have been awake all night with a crying baby, your emotions are everywhere and you just need 5mins to be you and know that your baby is safe. Whether that’s being alone or talking to other mums who are going through the same thing, sometimes it’s even just to let them go to the toilet on their own! All mums know that one, my kids would still follow me to the toilet at 11 years old.
I have had many assistant coaches help me over the years in both Belfast and Banbridge, whether that’s been Becca, Maddie, Zoe working their way through uni or Paula, Tracy, Katherine, Emma, Rachel, Janet and Lyn who bring their knowledge of being mum’s and coaches, I wouldn’t be able to do it without them.

To coach females in sport isn’t just about getting them active, it’s about learning more about the female body and how it’s affected during different parts of our lives and how we can adapt what we do to make us the strongest we can be at that time. I’ve been learning about the female body my whole life obviously but it’s only recently that more research is coming out on how we can help females in sport. Grainne Donnelly is a massive pioneer for woman’s sport not only here in NI, but across the world with her research on returning to running postpartum and her course on The Athletic Female where she works with doctors, nutritionists & scientists to help us understand the female body. Now more and more information is becoming available which is fantastic not just for coaches but for everyone to be able to understand the female body.

Buggy Club has brought so many people together over the years and we have given hundreds of children the opportunity to see that being active is good for you. I’ve had so many mums & dads tell me that their children play Buggy Club around the house and garden. My own children did the same thing and they still come to help me at Buggy Club now when they are off school. I have seen lots of buggy club babies out doing many different sports, athletics, hockey, Gaelic, gymnastics, rugby etc and it’s so good to see them active and enjoying sport.

Thank you for all your support over the years. Heather
