SHORTLANDS GOLF CLUB WIN THE SALVER!

What a fantastic day for Shortlands Golf Club as our past captains and our current vice captain secured a brilliant victory in the annual Salver competition, played yesterday on their home course against Dartford Golf Club and Cherry Lodge Golf Club!

There was some excellent golf on display, but it was Shortlands who came out on top to claim the coveted Salver!

A huge congratulations to our winning team of Past Captains, who did the club proud and thoroughly deserved their victory.

The Captain of Cherry Lodge had the honour of presenting the Salver to Shortlands Club Captain Alan Turner, who proudly accepted the trophy on behalf of the club.

And, of course, no Shortlands victory would be complete without a celebration… and the winning team certainly made the most of it, celebrating well into the late hours!

Congratulations to all the team — a fantastic result and another Salver heading back to Shortlands!

Seated is former member Brian Colins whose father started the salver competition some 41 years ago and who kindly joined the teams for the evening meal.

The team and club would like to add their thanks to past captain Ian Smith who undertook the organisation of the entire event and did so in magnificent style.

A fabulous day at the club yesterday when it was the turn of the male members to invite a lady to play in the annual Mens invitational.
Worthy winners were Kevin Rolfe and Marie Wood with a one point lead over the runners up the Captain and Lady Captain.
A huge thank you to all that were involved in the day and the dinner that followed.

On the hottest day of the year, our ladies truly came up trumps.

Yesterday, Chislehurst Golf Club hosted the prestigious Kent Golf ABCD Meeting, and our club was brilliantly represented across multiple categories, with five players entering the Division D category and two competing in Division C.It is an absolute delight to report that our players walked away with the silverware in both the C and D divisions, marking an incredible clean sweep.

A huge congratulations goes out to Natalie Walsh Winning Division C. Breda Murphy winning Division D, close on her heels in second place Angela Cummins. Outstanding performances and fantastic victories under challenging, scorching conditions, in there first ever Kent competition.

Super proud of our ladies. Congratulation from Tracy Rolfe Ladies Captain and the entire SGC Ladies Section. 🥳🍾🥂⛳️

🇬🇧🏆 ENGLAND v THE REST OF THE WORLD – AND WHAT A WIN! 🏆🇬🇧

It was scorching, the sun was blazing, but there was no stopping Team England in Shortlands Golf Club’s annual England v The Rest of the World Mixed Invitation Match!

In what has become one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the Shortlands calendar, the two sides battled it out in glorious conditions, with some great golf, plenty of laughs and, of course, a healthy dose of competitive spirit!

But this year there was a clear winner… TEAM ENGLAND! 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

Skippered by our Club Captain Alan Turner, England produced a resounding victory to claim bragging rights for another year. A fantastic performance from the whole team and a thoroughly deserved win!

A huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped make it such a memorable day. The heat may have been intense, but the competition was even hotter!

Well played Team England and commiserations to Sam Samuel and his ROTW team....

On a different note, and while we are celebrating, a huge congratulations to our Jack Hicks team who pulled off a memorable win at Holtye golf club to take them to the final.

Another Superb Band Night at Shortlands!

The fairways came alive last night with the sound of music as our very own songstress from behind the bar, Zara, took to the stage alongside this year’s fantastic guest band, CHAIN!

With 100+ members, friends and guests turning out, it was another brilliant night of music, dancing, laughter and great atmosphere — exactly what Shortlands is all about!

A huge thank you from all of us who attended to Dean Smith and Mark Spencer for putting so much time, effort and enthusiasm into organising yet another sell-out event. Nights like this don’t just happen, and we really do appreciate everything you do to make them happen.

And finally, a hearty thank you to the man behind those wonderful pizzas — they went down an absolute treat!

Another fantastic night at Shortlands. Great music, great company and great memories.

Here’s to the next one!

I recently read an article in National Club Golfer by Ewan Murray who for more than three decades has been one of the most recognisable and respected voices in golf on why he feels green keeping standards have improved dramatically.

He says “The standard of greenkeeping throughout the world has changed. I think when you have experienced people training young up-and-coming greenkeepers in the right way to do things, that leads to a steady progression.
“You have the head greenkeeper who knows exactly what needs to be done on that golf course, and then he has a plan for his staff to go and execute. It’s just done in a much more professional way, and with a lot of pride as well.
“A greenkeeper wants their course to look as good as it can, and I think in days gone by, that wasn’t necessarily the case.
“The changes in equipment have made things easier.
“That’s the kudos I would give to greens staff, that they work in a much more professional manner. You see greenkeepers checking pH levels – that’s been introduced over the years – and if you add all the things together, you’re going to get a better product. The standard of greenkeeping has gone up enormously.”

Our own outstanding greens staff, through one of the hottest, driest and most challenging periods in the club's history, have worked tirelessly to ensure that Shortlands Golf Club continues to present a course that members can be proud to call their home. Battling prolonged drought conditions has meant long hours, difficult decisions and an unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest possible standards, often in circumstances beyond anyone's control.

Their dedication has certainly not gone unnoticed. With membership at an all-time high, we continue to receive glowing comments from new members, guests and visiting golfers alike about the quality and presentation of our course. Those compliments are a direct reflection of the professionalism, skill and pride shown by our greens team every single day.

On behalf of everyone at Shortlands Golf Club, they deserve our sincere thanks for the remarkable job they have done in keeping the course looking and playing so well under such exceptional conditions.

The stage is set for one of the most eagerly anticipated days in the Shortlands Golf Club calendar!

It's England vs The Rest of the World as Club Captain Alan Turner leads his England side into battle against the Rest of the World team in the club's annual international match.

Expect plenty of friendly rivalry, colourful outfits, competitive golf and, no doubt, a few laughs along the way as two proud teams compete for bragging rights. Whether you're playing or cheering from the clubhouse, it's always a fantastic day that brings members together and showcases the fun, camaraderie and spirit that make Shortlands Golf Club so special.

Who will be celebrating at the end of the day? Will England keep hold of the honours, or will the Rest of the World claim victory?

Good luck to both teams, and here's to another memorable day on the course!
