Today is Day 2 of our first autumn programme, and the focus is lesson planning.

This is usually the point where the question shifts from:
“Can I really do this?”
to:
“Ahhh, now I see how it all works.”

Watching everything begin to fall into place and seeing our learners grow in confidence is one of our favourite parts of the course.

“I’ll never be able to stand up and teach.”

I hear this on nearly every course.

Our learners arrive with years of professional knowledge from health, care, public services, corporate organisations and the fire service.

They know their subject.
Teaching it is the part that feels daunting.

They begin as strangers, but by day two they’re sharing ideas, building connections and spotting new opportunities.

Then comes the moment they switch on their cameras and teach.

The nerves settle.
Their confidence appears.
The person who said, “I can’t do this” finishes with the biggest smile in the room.

That moment never gets old.

The last couple of weeks at Petals Training have reminded me exactly why I still love doing this after all these years.

Last week we were in Wales with a group from the third sector. An organisation investing in its people so they can go on to deliver some incredible programmes of their own.

What a group. ❤️

Heart-led, passionate about the people they support and now becoming brilliant trainers too. Their future learners are in for an absolute treat.

This week Petals has been near Blackpool with a completely different group.

For them, the Level 3 Education & Training Award is needed for compliance. Their day jobs are safety critical.

You might expect the training to be very serious but on micro-teach day. 😂

I always encourage learners to teach something they genuinely enjoy because that’s when you see the person behind the job title.

So this week we’ve learnt how to make the perfect espresso and discovered there’s far more science to it than I ever appreciated ☕️

We’ve learnt how aircraft actually fly and how to create the perfect campervan life, including how to kit out your van properly.

Different sectors. Different reasons for needing the qualification. Completely different personalities.

Yet when we give people the tools to teach well and then let them bring a little bit of themselves into the room that’s where the magic happens.

Micro-teach day will forever be one of my favourite parts of this course.

I get to stop teaching, sit back and watch our learners become the trainers and I never get bored of that

For me, training should never be about standing at the front and simply delivering information.

It is about creating a space where everyone feels comfortable joining in, sharing their ideas and asking questions. Every learner brings their own knowledge and experience to the room, and that deserves to be heard and valued.

Watching a group grow in confidence over the three days is one of my favourite parts of delivering the Level 3 Award in Education and Training.

Sometimes you teach a group of learners and they inspire the socks off you.

I’m working with a pretty special bunch at the moment.

Kindness. Compassion. Inclusivity. Diversity. Endless laughter. And an organisation doing some incredible work in the world.

I came back from lunch yesterday to find them surrounded by boxes, sorting through an enormous donation of kit from the Commonwealth Games.

Hundreds of pieces of kit, all being sorted ready to be gifted into their local community, including to disadvantaged children and adults.

The room was full of laughter, chatter, people mucking in and just this wonderful feeling of collective kindness.

You can’t manufacture that.

And today is Micro Teach Day. ❤️

My favourite day.

The day they get to teach the group.

The day I get to sit back and watch them put into practice everything they’ve learnt over the four days we’ve spent together.

The planning. The nerves. The creativity. The moments when they suddenly realise, “I can actually do this.”

It’s the day I usually walk away utterly inspired by what I’ve watched unfold.

Today they’re another step closer to gaining their teaching qualification.

It’s also the day I say goodbye to them for now.

I arrived to teach them.

I’m leaving having learnt a fair bit from them too.

What a group!! ❤️

I LOVE micro-teach day. ❤️

The first two days I teach.
Then this happens and I get to sit back like a ridiculously proud parent and watch them put it all into practice.

I’m working with a very special group at the moment. The work they do brings so much joy and magic into other people’s lives, and this week I’ve watched them bring that same magic into the classroom.

Yesterday we had Disney, the mystery of the number 13, team building with spaghetti and marshmallows and an actual OVEN. 😂

Yes. A learner packed his car with everything he needed, including the oven, to teach us how to make smoked meat using a portable cooker.

This naturally meant the learners were preparing their lunch while learning. My kind of lesson. 😂

I always tell people to choose a micro-teach subject they genuinely enjoy. Yesterday showed exactly why. The enthusiasm was infectious, the planning was incredible and the room was full of laughter, learning and people cheering each other on.

Last week they made me feel part of their team when they included me in their cook-for-each-other lunch.

This week I’m on the sidelines feeling ridiculously proud of them.

Half the group down. Half to go today.

I cannot WAIT to see what turns up in the classroom next. Although the bar has been set fairly high now someone has brought an oven. 😂❤️

This is why I love teaching people to teach.

And why micro-teach day will always be one of my favourite days of the course. ❤️

One of the hardest conversations I have with a new learner starts with:

“I have already paid for a train the trainer course.”

They completed the training, received a lovely certificate and genuinely believed they had gained the teaching qualification they needed.

Only later, when their organisation carried out an audit or reviewed its compliance requirements, did they discover the certificate did not meet the required standard.

They needed the Level 3 Award in Education and Training, an Ofqual-regulated qualification.

This meant paying for another course and giving up more of their time.

The original training may still have given them valuable knowledge and skills. The problem was that they did not fully understand what they were buying or what their certificate would allow them to evidence afterwards.
