Know what to do if you’re caught in a rip current.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing away from the shore and can quickly pull you into deeper water.

If you’re caught in one, stay calm and do not try to swim against it. If you can, swim or wade parallel to the shore until you’re out of the current, then make your way back to the beach. If you cannot swim out of the rip, float on your back and raise your hand to attract attention.

If you see someone else caught in a rip, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Encourage them to float and, if it is safe to do so, throw them something that floats.

The safest place to swim is at a lifeguarded beach, between the red and yellow flags.
