⛵ A fantastic day of ILCA racing!
We welcomed 25 boats, including 10 Burton sailors, to Foremark Reservoir today for our ILCA Open, with the event also forming the final round of the 2026 Midlands ILCA Grand Prix.

The wind was difficult, but the race team provided some good courses and managed to complete two of the three scheduled races before the breeze finally gave up.

Congratulations to John Ling of Bartley SC, who won the second race and took the overall open event on countback from Paul Keeling of Blithfield SC, who won the first race. George Fereday of Earlswood Lake finished third.

For Burton, Carl Avery was our first home boat, finishing an excellent 5th overall in the ILCA 7, while Christine Statham was first female and first ILCA 6. Well done to both!

And a special well done to our two young sailors from Burton Joe and Robert , who completed his first class open today in IlCA 4 and 6. 👏

A huge thank you to Malc and Rod on the committee boat, who had a particularly challenging job as race officers, along with our fantastic safety boat team and galley crew. As always, these events simply wouldn’t happen without our brilliant volunteers and the time and effort they put in both on and off the water.

We also said a fond farewell to John Ling, who is stepping down as Midlands ILCA Grand Prix series coordinator. John has done a sterling job generating enthusiasm and energy throughout the season. Thank you, John!

And finally, thank you to Performance Sailcraft Europe for their generous sponsorship and for supplying the prizes for the 2026 Midlands series.

Well done to the BSC members who took part in the UKWA National Wind Sports Championships & Regional Windsurfing League Champions Cup at Rutland Sailing Club last weekend, joining windsurfers from across the UK for a weekend of exciting racing.

🏆 Some brilliant performances earned the team the coveted Championship Cup - a prestigious national title, which was contested by windsurfing teams from across the country.

This is the first time in history it has been won by a Midlands team, a huge achievement!

🏆 Our club has seen an exceptional show of talent across all fleets, including Techno, Raceboard, IQ Foil and Windsurfer LT - bringing home multiple gold, silver and bronze trophies!

🏆 The same event saw our Foremark Flyers be awarded the Regional Windsurfing League Trophy for the Midlands region the 5th year running, the culmination of results of this year's highly competitive regional series.

🏆 A wonderful conclusion to a successful year full of windsurfing adventures and joy, that has seen our windsurfers take home the extremely competitive national Eric Twiname Windsurfing Cup for Team Midlands among many others!

A fantastic achievement and a great reflection of the talent, enthusiasm and exceptional dedication of our coaches and windsurfing leadership within the club.

⛵ The Arthur George Memorial Pursuit Race – this Sunday!

This Sunday sees the return of one of the most popular and hotly contested race days in the Burton Sailing Club calendar – the Commodore Cup, incorporating the Arthur George Memorial Pursuit Race.

But who was Arthur George, and why does this race mean so much to the Club?

Arthur, or Art to his friends, was a much-loved and long-standing member of BSC, who sadly passed away in 2019, far too young. A hugely talented and natural sailor, he sailed a number of different boats over the years – from a Mirror and Merlin Rocket to the 505 and Flying Fifteen – and even enjoyed the occasional borrowed Contender!

Amongst others, he sailed his Merlin and Flying Fifteen with his wife Angie and crewed for Tim Bird in his 505 at local, national and World Championship level.

But it wasn’t just the trophies that made Arthur special. He was always generous with his knowledge, helping other sailors and sharing tips to make the whole FF fleet more competitive. And, importantly, he loved a pursuit race.

After Arthur’s passing, Angie donated a beautiful trophy in his memory, which features silhouettes of three of the dinghies he sailed. This is awarded to the winner of the memorial pursuit race held each year on the Sunday closest to his birthday - 29 September, and this year, Art would have celebrated his 70th birthday.

So let’s get a great turnout of members on the water and celebrate a great BSC member by sailing, racing and having fun. 💙

A good but shifting breeze welcomed 10 sailors today for our Phantom Open.

A brace of wins in the second and third races, was enough to seal the glory for The Chase Sailing Club’s Sam Coxon, equal on points but ahead on countback from Ribble/CCSC’s Martin Knott, who won the first race.
Shustoke Sailing Club’s Jim Hopton took third spot overall.
Despite having a fabulous race in the final event of the day, a win for Delph Sailing Club’s Phil Worth just wasn’t enough to get him a place on the legendary Burton ‘mushroom’ podium.

All in all, a great day on the water. Congratulations to our winners and
massive thanks to everyone that made the effort to travel today, to our race management and safety teams and also those helping out in the club galley today we really couldn’t do this without you!

⛵ That’s a wrap on the 2026 Wednesday Night Series!

What a fantastic way to round off our Wednesday evenings! There was a good turn out on the water tonight, with plenty of close racing and battles throughout the fleet.

The race team got us underway promptly as promised, sailing under a ‘U’ flag — a firm but fair way of saying “do not be OCS at the gun!”

Tonight’s racing - Chris sailed another excellent race in the Zen, taking the win ahead of Derek in the K1. Grant teamed up with Tim to take third spot, ahead of Malc and Mari in fourth.

And across the whole series, an impressive 43 sailors have taken part. Wednesday evenings have once again delivered some great turnouts and some seriously competitive racing.

🏆 Congratulations to Stuart, who takes the series outright.

And then, to finish the evening in true Burton Sailing Club style… Pie, mash and peas, smothered in lashings of gravy!
A huge thank you to Sarah and Debbie for putting on a fabulous post-race feast and to everyone who has sailed, raced, volunteered, cooked, helped out and supported our Wednesday evenings throughout the series.

Great stuff, everyone! 👏

☀️Wednesday evening paddle on the water 🌊

Wednesday evenings have been a popular time this summer for our paddle board members to get down to the club, get out on the water and enjoy a paddle as the sun starts to set.
With safety boat cover on the water on Wednesday evenings, it’s a great time for members to get their boards out and enjoy a paddle knowing there’s safety cover in place. And with just two Wednesday evening sessions left, there’s still time to make the most of them!

🚤 The people behind the safety on the water…
Whether it’s sailing, windsurfing, winging or SUP, there’s something that has to be in place before our members can get out on the water — safety cover.

Our safety boat crews are there throughout our organised sessions, keeping an eye on everyone on the water and ready to help whenever needed.

Every member plays their part by completing duties during the year, including safety boat duties. It’s all part of what makes Burton Sailing Club such a great club — members working together so that everyone can enjoy their time on the water safely.

Quite simply, without members volunteering their time to carry out these duties, we wouldn’t be able to get out on the water.

A huge thank you to everyone who takes their turn and helps keep things running! 👏
