Drybrook RFC 1st XV Match Report

Drybrook RFC 26 - 15 Silhillians RFC
A good solid defensive performance laid the foundation for this excellent victory at home against a useful Silhillians outfit.
The afternoon began with a poignant show of respect to Colin Freeman, whose stepson Dean Jelf was playing in his usual role up front. Colin played his rugby at Cinderford, but his family have been a huge part of Drybrooks recent history and Colin, well known to us all, had become a familiar supporter of them all at the club. We would like to send all of Colins family our deepest condolences at this extremely sad time for them all.
The game started with Silhillians kicking off towards the club and Drybrook immediately launching an attack. The Silhillians defence held until the tenth minute when Sam Peaper was the beneficiary of a quickly taken tap penalty to put Drybrook in front. Andrew Charlish added the conversion for a seven points to nil lead. The game then swayed two and fro with both teams looking to use the ball and on twenty seven minutes Silhillians drew level with a well taken converted try.
With forty minutes played it looked as though the teams would finish the half level, however relentless pressure from the Drybrook forwards fittingly saw Dean Jelf grab a try. Charlish converted to make the half time score fourteen points to seven in favour of the home team.
The second half began, and this time it was Silhillians who started strongly, and they earned three points from a penalty to bring the score to fourteen points to ten.
The game was a good contest and both teams were well up for the occasion. Drybrook bolstered by the return of Mitch Baldwin in the centre and Mikey Adiss at ho**er always looked to have the edge, with the elusive Charlish counter attacking from fullback and Ben Jones breaking tackles on the wing, they took play up to the Silhillians twenty two metre line. The ever opportunistic Peaper grabbed the ball and caught the defence cold by breaking through the middle of the ruck to cross the line unopposed for his second try of the game. Charlish was again successful with the boot and Drybrook moved eleven points clear at twenty one points to ten.
Charlish, who looked a threat all afternoon, then seemed to have scored the try of the match, attacking from deep to cross the line under the posts. The ref though disallowed the score due to an alleged crossing offence earlier in the move.
Silhillians were still well in the fight and brought the score back to twenty one points to fifteen after creating space for their wing to cross in the left hand corner.
Drybrook, having suffered from a couple of last minute disappointments this season were in no mood to suffer the same fate again. They sealed the game when Charlish got a deserved try with three minutes remaining to run out deserved winners twenty six points to fifteen.
Silhillians had proved to be stiff opposition and this was a hard earned five points for the Mannings men.
Mitch Baldwin looked as good as ever in the centre while Charlish and Jones have given Drybrook far more of a cutting edge in attack. It was though the irrepressible Peaper who took the man of the match honours after another fine performance on the back row.
The Drybrook boys were at times guilty of not taking the obvious options, but this victory will give them plenty of impetus going into their next match away at Worcester who top the league unbeaten so far.
Drive on Dry !

Spartans 33-34 Drybrook II

The United Xv headed up to Lansdown road to take on Spartans who were sitting ahead of them in the league via points difference.

This was certainly a game of two halves, with Spartans dominating the first 40, with Drybrook’s penalty count nearly into double figures, Spartans took advantage of the ill discipline and came into the half time break leading 26-5, Drybrook’s try came via the returning Carl Moore.

Drybrook started the second period strongly with Carl Moore adding his second try which Andrew Milner converted, soon after, a great break from fullback CJ Taylor took the play into the Spartans 22, a crisp pass from Rhys Gardner returning after an 18 month injury lay off led to Dean Large powering over from close range, Milner added the extras, taking the score to 26-19.
Next on the scoreboard for Drybrook was replacement Jack Davis, after a sustained period of pressure, Jack picked and went, with Milner adding the extras to tie the game up.
Spartans regathered the restart and took the play to Drybrook, following a few carries, space was created on the edge for them to score a converted try to take the lead 33-26.
CJ Taylor captaining the side in the absence of stalwart Neil Morgan then got his team back into the came taking an offload to score near the posts, Milner missed the conversion to leave the score 33-31 with 4 minutes left to play.
Drybrook gathered the restart and set about gaining another score to sn**ch a win. Spartans conceded a penalty around the halfway line, which was kicked down towards the Spartans 22, following a fine catch and drive, Drybrook were awarded another penalty, up stepped Milner to convert from near the touchline to give Drybrook a one point lead.

This was an outstanding performance from the 2nd Xv who shown great character and resilience to come from 26-5 down to get the victory against a very good Spartans side

A nail biter this certainly was, man of the match award went to Lee Clark who had an industrious afternoon on the back row.

The United Xv head to Old Pats 2’s next week, both sides remain undefeated in the league which will surely lead to an entertaining game.

🏉 MATCH REPORT | DRYBROOK 3s vs CHOSEN HILL 3s

Full-time: Drybrook 3s 17–40 Chosen Hill 3s

A scoreline that certainly doesn’t reflect the game!

Drybrook put in a tremendous shift today against Chosen Hill, with plenty of positives to take away despite the final result. Two late tries for the visitors made the scoreline look considerably more comfortable than the match actually was.

Chosen Hill started strongly, taking a 0–7 lead after 5 minutes before extending it to 0–14 on 25 minutes following an interception.

Drybrook continued to battle, with the forwards putting in some excellent work. The pressure eventually told, with Virgo getting us on the scoreboard after some strong forward play to make it 5–21.

Drybrook came out fighting in the second half, and the momentum started to swing. Blake crossed for a well-deserved try after some fantastic forward work, with Swordy adding the conversion to bring the score back to 12–21.

The boys were really growing into the game, and up stepped vice-captain Jack Freeman, who powered over for another try to bring Drybrook within four points at 17–21. Suddenly, we had a real game on our hands!

Unfortunately, Chosen Hill managed to respond, and a couple of late scores stretched the final margin to 17–40.

🏆 PLAYER AWARDS

💪 Forward of the Match – Jack Freeman

An absolute monster up front. Carried brilliantly all afternoon, led from the front and showed exactly what being a vice-captain is all about. A thoroughly deserved award.

🥇 Back of the Match – Theo Terry

Class at scrum-half today. Controlled the game brilliantly, made good decisions and kept things ticking over. A top performance.

Plenty of positives to take away today. The scoreline doesn’t tell the full story, and the effort, commitment and character shown by the lads deserves recognition.

Heads up, boys. We keep building, keep improving and go again next week!
